Thunderbird Club

A little story about customer service.

I purchased a used GK Fusion 800s from reverb for a fair price. When I got it I found that it would get static-ey (like a dirty pot), and cut out a bit during the first hour of playing at low to moderate volume. I mentioned this to the seller and he refunded me over 1/2 what I paid (awesome guy for doing that). At this point I’m only into for $325. I was considering just dealing with the static/cutting out thing but decided to fill out the GK out of warranty form and see what could happen. I was also worried they might not be able to replicate the symptom.

I have had previous contact with them with a problem with one of the speakers in a new GK Neo IV 4 ohm 212. On that they sent a brand new speaker and told my not to bother sending the questionable one back!

Score one solid for GK customer service.

After that, before I finally sent the 800s in, I had annoying questions about the 3 12ax7’s and what exactly each tube served. They were responsive and clear on each tube’s function in the pre-amp. The first half of V1 is input gain, second half V1 is part of the overdrive circuit, first half of V2 is part of the overdrive circuit, second half of V2 and all of V3 is the equalizer circuit. This all makes sense when viewing the physical layout of the pre-amp board. The website description of the purpose of the tubes indicates that one whole tube is dedicated for the overdrive, so I had hoped all of V3 would be for overdrive, so I could try a lower gain tube, but they said they simplified the website “copy” for the general public. The fact that they clarified my questions (and tolerated my multiple replies) also says a lot!

Score another one solid for GK customer service.

Back to the amp. I sent it in and they were able to replicate the problem but not necessarily isolate it. They replaced everything but the power amp, which they confirmed was working properly. All new current rev pre-amp, connector board and I/O board, all for $333.

Score another solid for GK customer service!

So a virtually brand new 800s for $658. And BTW, I think this is a great sounding amp, even when it was not working at 100%. 3 x 12ax7 preamp, yay!. Class D power, meh, but ok. Light weight and compact, yes. IMO the best compact class D head. I have a Ampeg V7, and it’s a great class D, but I’m selling it. I have a PF800 I’m also porting with, also a great class D, but not exactly compact. I’ve had an SVT7, a Mesa D800, and a couple Orange TB’s (a 1000w v1 and a 500w v2) and while these all sound great, (the SVT 7 and the Mesa were my least favorite) this 800s is the best sounding of the bunch..

So this morning, on the GK club forum, one of the members asked about when the new GK Legacy heads would be available. They have had one on order at Sweetwater for a while and Sweetwater hasn’t been able to provide a date or a reason for the delay. So this morning at 8am, I figured I’d throw the question to the guys I have been in touch with. And I got a thorough and detailed answer to the question back common him within minutes! On a Sunday morning!

Score another big one for GK customer service!
Love to hear good stories like that were companies take care of people.

Used the '66 NR today. Each time I get better results. Today I put some SIT Power Wounds on and in band context it sounded really good. Nice lows, good punch, but some highs needed to be tamed a bit. With the '64 I love hearing is with me just playing but the NR doesn't sound all that great alone (which is not how music is played anyway), but with everyone else really good and I'm increasingly pleased. Even the wife said ti sounded much better today. I really wanted flats on it but the bass just may not call for them given what I want, for now anyway.

I'm still tweaking the bridge pup up and down to get what I like when both full on. All the way up and it's too present and takes away some the bigness and begins to sound more bridge burpy, if that makes sense. So far mostly down seems to be the sweet spot for me. But I'm finding I like the bridge backed off to 8 or 9 for a little more mids and lows. Neck alone sounds good as well but I find I go back to both. Definitely going in the right direction of sonic bliss and if it stopped where it is I would be very happy. I am finding it called for the Ampeg and the tubes. Just can't get the ABM to get me where I want, at least not yet.

Ergos again are fantastic. A joy to play.

Showed J.T. pics and gave him an update and he thought is turned out stunning and was thrilled.

Some backside.

Yep, I’ll struggle with finding a good tone in my garage alone, then bring it to whatever room we play and after adjusting to get a good sound, find that sound isn’t great once the band starts. Learning to make changes on the fly, during a gig is a skill in itself.

Just can't get the ABM to get me where I want, at least not yet.

I love my Ashdown and find it more usable with the 8 ohm GK Neo IV 210, compared to the 4 ohm 212, but I’m finding it is a BIG sounding cab, just like the 212. With the Ashdown I’m starting to find it’s all about cutting bass (especially the 125 Hz slider) and then pushing volume so the mids, high mids and highs aren’t buried by the low mids and lows. The trick will be dialing that amp to the room fast. I’ve only used it live twice with the 4 ohm 212 and I can’t say I loved it. I’m hoping the GK cabs don’t turnout to be a bad match for the Ashdown.

When I get my Fusion 800s back, it’ll be interesting to see if I have the same issue taming the low mids and lows of the GK cabs.

No ill effects from the clams, they looked good. As a youngster we would go clamming with my Dad, we'd have them steamed. I ate too many one time and the result was not so pleasant, haven't been able to eat them since, but the prep you showed looked very good, you could have talked me into trying them :)

never mind the clams......cold fried chicken mañana?....

My guitar buddy Andrew and I finally managed to both have a Saturday mostly free (in part because it was raining all day) for the first time in a month, and got together at my place to play together.

First time unleashing the Sinister Thunderbird where anyone else of musical inclination could hear me playing her. The wife and the cat have no great interest.

Without doubt, my best comfort level and play quality I think ever. Extra bouncy feels still a day later.

The 'Bird is perfectly happy to play Social Distortion songs in Eb along with Andrew's gold top, though my Rumble Studio 40 emulating an SVT.

Also first time the two of us jammed to Moises-modded tracks with the original bass and guitar pulled out, which was a new and unique kind of freedom.

I am bonding strongly with this instrument. I think it likes me.

Nothing plays like a Gibson Thunderbird.

Let’s keep that between us.

The red ones are lovely with some subtle sparkle. The one I have is a second with a crack in the finish below the neck pickup. Fortunately, you have to look for it to know it’s there. I run the Black Beauties on it that @KaraQ installed on it before passing it on to me. I really like it.

I keep an eye out for a minty one, but I haven’t seen one for the last three years. If I do find one at some point, I’ll willingly pass my current one on to you or one of the others here so it stays in the group. It’s a special Thunderbird.

Awesome, sir. I’ll add my name in the goblet.

Great to hear (and see), Donnie!

I am bummed that I can’t make it. I could if it were Tuesday instead of Wednesday night. Ugh. It will no doubt be a great show!
Yah, I also wish you could attend Marshall. Being the evening before T-day, it's an odd night to play but I think we'll get a nice local Pacifica crowd of peeps that want to start the 'holiday' with some live music! We've shared a bill with Rue 66 a few months ago (Kirstin sings in that French-centric pop band) - they are a really fun band. The other band (The Nineteens) sound good too (originals) so it will be a nice evening of groovy music.

Kirstin did a 'costume change' between sets - not knowing I saw her from a distance and thought.., who's that looker?

I like clam chowder(New England, not Manhattan). One of the few seafood-y things I'll eat. Fried clams being the other.
