So I belatedly realized some things:

Using a laser cutter to shape pickguards is stupid accurate, once you get speed, intensity, and pass count dialled in for the material you are using.

Even with strong ventilation, when laser cutting plastic, a NIOSH respirator is yer friend... unless you like hacking up tar oysters for days. Nasty stuff.

My laser cutter loves cutting masonite. Amazing sharp clean cuts.

Cutting masonite templates with a laser feels like living in the future... and the future feels like cheating.

3mm masonite is too thin for a beveling template even for a tiny dremel router table.
But 6mm is just right.
And when you include laser-cut 2mm pilot holes, stacking and gluing is trivial. And faster than another trip for thicker masonite than what I had on hand.

I can use cut finishing nails to make alignment pins to hold the pickguard to the template and eliminate 90% of the DS tape needed to maintain alignment.

Will all this work out to be faster than my previous saw-file-and-scrape technique?

No idea.

But I'm having fun working it out.

Oh, and the laser can double as a "Cricut" machine for adhesive vinyl, in addition to engraving....

That does look like fun! Setting up a production line?

The Jackson arrived. I put some poly in the damaged finish, mostly to keep the chip from getting worse. It will never look pristine, but it shouldn't get worse now. The blue looks purple in some light. I like it. There is so much black that dark purple-blue does not look as flashy as it could. Light maple is jarring for the fretboard. The neck is road kill flat, but I suppose that is OK for a 5. It tunes up easily and seems to stay in tune. The frets feel reasonably good and intonation is OK, not perfect right off. Next step is to plug it in and see what it sounds like. Probably tomorrow afternoon.

We need to see pictures!

They are! My Burny is really only simlar to a Ric in shape.
I'm really digging the ceramic pickups with SIT stainless rounds. I put on that tailpiece (thanks BTW!) you gave me a few years ago, and that allows me to use long scale strings.

LOL - Marshall is as pure as the driven snow, so no worries about him. But if anyone else should try, they won’t need a lawyer either, a good surgeon or undertaker might be helpful though.

An interesting security strategy for those of you in the SVT and Acoustic led sled club would be to put price tags on all your bass gear. But significantly undervalue all the basses while drastically overvaluing the super heavy gear. The thieves will hit the high dollar stuff first. The resulting hernia or broken back will keep them from taking anything else.

Ah! Mockingbirds are super cool. I don't know what you've tried so far. I'm sure my pickups are way different than yours, but the Pro Steels may be worth trying if you are ok with them being scooped. What pickups did you put in your Eagle? RS66 or Dunlop Super Brights may work. Of course you have EQ on your preamp.

My sifu/Wing Chun teacher, Bob Angell, left us this last evening, he'd been dealing with chemo for about two and a half years. It's hard to lose people, I don't like it at all, especially when they're your teacher, brother, mentor, and friend.
He was a blues guitarist, a damn good one. He was there when Plan 9 got inducted into the RI Music Hall of Fame about 6 years ago, saw our set. He had a good word for my playing, that was cool. I recently bought his last record (Brand New Blues), which was being considered for a Grammy nomination. That was pretty cool too.
Anyway, it's hard to have to miss people, it's sad and lousy. But you keep the good stuff, that's what their life contributed to yours. That's life...
We are all walking into the light.

I'm going to jam with Reverie's drummer tomorrow, it's been planned for a few days. I was going to bag it now, but I think Bob would say, with resolute emphasis, that I should go play. He'd be right, life needs music, and I've always been a believer.

Life is good.

Sorry to hear that you lost Bob, but glad you have lots of memories.
