I was curious about how the '66 NR w/916s and DTFs compared to the white VP with GHS flats so I took the VP to rehearsal tonight. It has been weeks since I used anything but the NR and months since I used a VP.

First off, I was reminded how great VPs are. Sounded great with the tubes and the ABM, and easily feels like a $1200 instrument.

Second and to my point, the VP had much more output and required me to turn down several clicks. The VP also seemed to sound naturally bigger and lower.
I was planning to use the '64 Reverse Sunday but may go back to the '66 NR for a better comp. I am really loving the NR, but I can say pretty confidently it doesn't have the same lows as the VP, and without a question doesn't have the output of the VP. Pups are pretty much in the same location and the strings were likely about as similar as you can get being different brands.

I'm curious how the lows and mids really compare to the '64 so once I get my new DTFs that I ordered I will put them on the '64 and compare with the NR with the same strings. But will have to wait a month or more to let them break in. That will be interesting.

Austin area stores are generally good.
Biggest downside at the Round Rock store is no Thunderbirds stocked these days.

Gotta go to Hollywood to see a Thunderbird. None ever in Bako, Santa Clarita, Santa Maria, Visalia, etc. And even then only an Epi '64.

Gotta go to Hollywood to see a Thunderbird. None ever in Bako, Santa Clarita, Santa Maria, Visalia, etc. And even then only an Epi '64.

Been months since I've been to either GC. I think I saw one Epi Bird at the PSL store.

Yeah, it was probably only up about 48 hours. It would have been less but I wanted to talk with Sharon first. We tend to discuss large purchases even when they're no brainers.

If money was no object (Yeah, like that'll happen), I'd consider sending the 67NR back to Gibson since IDK any luthiers in this area, and sending it to CA-and back-would add ~$700 to my tab. And considering that I prolly won't be playing anything that much longer, there'd be very little point. IMO.

Start asking around. Just maybe not GC! There are certainly some great luthiers there somewhere. You might find someone to do the work right and reasonably. Just take them some peanut butter flavored whiskey. OK, maybe don't do that.

There was one guy(he did the headstock reattachment), but he seems to have disappeared.

I just purchased it last month from Rivington guitars on Reverb. Kinda pissed they didnt include the strap holes somebody drilled into the body in the photos. Im guessing they were from the same genius who tried to install the other bridge. I listed it back for sale but am tempted on keeping it and selling one of my other basses... Its such a rowdy sounder.

Not that I'm aware of (or remember). Others may have better info.

Excellent review/comparison. Did not know you don't use the "superfluous" pickup. Means I'm in good company.
