Thunderbird Club

I always thought the Aria brand explorer was a fun looking bass, lots of neat paint jobs on them. No idea how they sound or feel…

If I were in the market for this body style I’d look strongly at the Alembic Exploiter (I think Entwistle played one for a while). Expensive, but hey, its an Alembic…

If I had Big Disposable Bucks I’d shop around for the best Thunderbird I could find and pay Alembic to give it the Big Brown treatment (as much as would fit) along with slimming it down a bit to add a sick laminate with a trans red or purple finish and gold hardware.
Starting with a legit bird means Gibson couldn’t hassle them about the shape. The headstock would have a correct logo headstock along with Alembic.

I really enjoyed the book I read about the Dead’s wall. Of course lots of Alembic history was included.

This is mine, I actually haven't been able to spend much time with since I got it about 4 months ago, it's from a run Epiphone did for AMS and ZZ Sounds a few years back. It its long scale with a stout neck, a bit bigger than a VP, it feels like a big bass and it is! I can't say that I've heard a lot about these specifically, my original intent was to put some different pickups in mine but, as it turns out, the previous owner had installed a Preamp and rewired it, and it sounds quite good as it is now. So, for the time being I'll leave it alone tho I may install some different knobs on it, the current ones don't do much for me.
At one point I owned an '80s Gibson, it was 32" scale, it was "OK" but nothing too inspiring tone wise and I ended up using it as trade fodder for a Thunderbird. Gibson Re-issued them as a long scale bass, essentially a pointy Thunderbird, with a 3 Point and TB Plus pickups, I kinda want one, but I'm hoping some form of common sense will prevail as I'm running out of space for these things.

Just get a wall rack.

Thanks, that's the input I'm looking for. Kinda pushing me towards the Gibson Reissues.

I've been eyeballing Grecos for a couple of years, but honestly, everytime I pick up my 2014 TB+ Thunderbird, I fall in love all over again and can't think of anything I'd change about it. I really think the TB+ PUPs get a bad rap. Mine is wearing DR Fat-Beams, and goes through a Steel Leather and 2 SushiBox pedals, so that probably really helps. But I can get every tone through this setup using the bass Volume and Tone knobs. It's made my 3 TC Sparks obsolete unless I'm playing another bass.
I actually like TB+ pickups. I think there's something special about 2001-ish vintage Gibson TB+ pickups. I have a 2001 Thunderbird that has some magic to it, and I'm pretty sure it's got quite a bit to do with those specific pickups.

I love the pluses just fine.

She does too.

They’re different but still shine at what they do. When I want to emphasize low end, the CP delivers in truckloads.

Just love love love how that came out! Red and gold is such a classy and uncommon color combo. You really need to try a set of Optima Gold rounds on that beast or a set of GHS Gold Flats. Both are great strings and bring a different sound to the table (the flats being very mid focused and bell clear while the rounds have a nice tight low end and subdued top end). Plus it completes the gold hardware look for those of us that are shallow.

Do you mean La Bella Gold Flats? They are a little higher in tension and the 760FL (104 set) is all I want to put on it. And they sounds great. If stable in a couple years, I might but I'm really happy with the DTFs.

My NR started out as a VP (pickups, bridge and tuners were scavenged off a 2018 VP). I even used vintage pickup spacing vs copying the NR reissue pickup spacing (which has the neck pickup closer to the neck). Even have two necks for it, a fretless and a fretted, both in roasted maple with rosewood boards…

Control layout is master volume, neck vol/tone, bridge vol/tone.
Hum...fretless. A Pbass just seems natural for that (i.e. Chuck's Stanley bass), But this...I like how this checks the fretless and Thunderbird boxes.

Ya'll inspired me to pick up my J yesterday, a beauty, assembled with top notch components, and great playing/sounding J bass. Nope, it's just never going to beat out my white VP for home practice, and will never see a gig. Nice bass though.

I am passively looking for an Explorer bass, just need to figure out which one to target. It seems the 80's with alder body are heavier, the 2000's are Korina with longer scale, and the Eppies are supposedly good basses, but the prices are pretty high.

Not much talk on Talkbass or on-line comparing them though. So if anyone has any input, or can point me to an article I'd appreciate it.
I do have one of the Epi Explorers.
Just like our Queen, I was underwhelmed by the Gibson 32 inch offering.
I jumped on this black one for $200 with the case many moons ago.
I modded with a Shaller roller bridge like Gibson used. Dropped in some China Buckers which sound amazing to me on this platform.
Put on some black Charvell branded tuners with a Hipshot drop D.
DR black beauty strings and Dunlop strap locks.
Fake blocks by creative cuts.
It gigs well and weighs in at 8.12 pounds.

The other Explorer is all Warmoth with the discontinued arrowhead headstock.
It sports Bartolini humbuckers that are very articulate.
The bridge is Ken Smith.
My band guys used to love this one.
It’s been through many mods. I like it simple like it is now. VVT with no crazy switching.
It weighs in at 11.25 pounds.

I’m amazed at how the Epi Explorers are going up in price. Maybe people are catching on like I did.
Good rig if you can find one within reason.
Cheers!
