although probably most of the stipends happen electronically, it seems really strange to see this level of talent playing to a tip jar...

True. I've long said some of the best players around are unknown and will remain that way, though not because of a lack of talent. Think of any great player, and there's some dude that's "better" playing to 50 people in some joint and few will ever known who he is. Maybe less common in the age of social media than in years pat, but still true.

Yep. When we played "Freebird" or "Sweet Home" did I play every effing note exactly as Leon played it? No, and neither did he I'd bet. Same with most of our repertoire (over 200 songs). There'd almost always be minor differences in live performances. And unless one of the members of the band whose song we were covering was in the audience, nobody knew. Or GAF.
Of course I s'pose we could've had charts for our entire song list, duplicating every effing note-including 'clams'-on the original recording. But that would mean having books the size of Webster's Unabridged-and industrial strength music stands-on 'stage'(which we also didn't have).
Leon said once that he played things differently. Didn't say what he meant. Intentional or it just come out differently. But he was crazy good and play wrong stuff and it would sound right.

so so true, especially in an environment like Nashville (seems more happening than Vegas, no joke) where these guys play one or two (some three) 4 hour sets honoring requests day in, day out......gonna pickup some kind of technique wether you like it or not....

Speaking of Skynyrd, they sure rocked live. Wish I could hear the bass a little better, but it's still pretty cool:

Unfortunately most of their live video recordings suck. They were definitely a "live" band. No show, all music. The music was the show I guess you could say.
One More From The Road is likely the best to hear the bass well. Even then it doesn't capture how massive Leon's sound was.

Ran across this the other night by accident. Long but some interesting history. It's about Gary's guitars and amps and what was done with them after he died. Funny story about when he was getting his trusty '58 LP restored. LS had several guitars stored in Nash during the flood. R&S Guitar Works in Winchester, Ky was sent the guitars to restore. Gary said I've got part and sent them. It was collection of various guitar parts from non vintage makers! He just wasn't a guitar nut like most. R&S (not mentioned in the video) said there was no way they were putting those parts in and and did it right.

That and Knebworth are two faves. One always had the impression that if Ronnie didn’t reign Allen in, he’d have kept Freebird going until he dropped from exhaustion.
Yes, those are the best two I know of as well. Still love the Knebworth story where no one was to go out on the long runway stage but Mick Jagger. Ronnie being Ronnie said they were going to go out on it during Freebird, but was reminded Mick would be hot. At one point during Freebird you can see him get the guys to go out on it. As a recall Leon ran out of cord early on. With Ronnie's reputation I'm 100% certain Mick said little to nothing to him about it.

Exactly. Unlike most cities, there you likely have to look for bad musicians. Too many good one's floating around.

tough one......Skynyrd or Aerosmith?
Depends on the song- for weapons-grade hard rock vocals with searing guitar, and a killer coda, I can think of none better than Aersomith's "Nobody's Fault" off the Rocks album.

But ruminations on the rock and roll lifestyle- it would be a tie between Skynyrd's "Working for the MCA" and Aerosmith's "No More, No More." But "Sweet Emotion" is a great one too.

But "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Dream On" stand alone as killer tomes-

Well, the first non-leaking battery I installed caused a god-awful racket I had never heard before with music equipment- sounding akin to a jet engine at idle, leaving me wondering if I had a bad cable or something else amiss with my equipment-

Turns out it was the battery, this rechargeable EBL. Note the malformed negative receptacle compared to the other battery on the right-
Disappointing since I paid a premium for the rechargeable one. I've generally had good results with EBL brand recharge batteries- I might've noticed upon initial charging but this one uses a USB port instead of a terminal contact charger like most other 9V rechargeable batteries-

I tried bending the tines back in place but that Thumb does not like it- but works with the other EBL rechargeable in the middle and the Durnegy Alkaline which are purported not to leak-

Oh well- but now the Thumb sings with the new battery in it-
I use EBL AA rechargeable batteries. When theyre working, theywork really well, holding a charge for a long time. But at random, some stop charging.
