As most always my T-Bird family triggers cool memories good things long dormant in my cache of expeiences- in this case one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes "A Passage for Trumpet". Because a I think of the trombone as a "fretless cousin" to the trumpet.I learned trombone in band, from instructors and books. I learned guitar early on from playing around, and from friends. Being in a duo made me learn a lot faster. Lots of "Guitar Player" mag articles. Then there was Ted Greene's book. Percussion? Self taught. Bass built on all of those, plus having always listened to the bass lines, sometimes learning to hum the parts of songs I especially liked. My bass playing is definitely influenced by horns, guitars, and percussion at the least.
But I was reflecting on my musical past and how I leaned more toward jazz than rock when It came to what I enjoyed playing as opposed to listening. But in the late-70's and 80's jazz was not that common in public hangouts and venues as was rock.
And so I recall that scene where a down and out trumpet player, circa 1960 when jazz ruled, hears Gabriel himself play and it is a beautiful run heard at around around time stamp 3:09 in the clip below-
