Thunderbird Club

I learned trombone in band, from instructors and books. I learned guitar early on from playing around, and from friends. Being in a duo made me learn a lot faster. Lots of "Guitar Player" mag articles. Then there was Ted Greene's book. Percussion? Self taught. Bass built on all of those, plus having always listened to the bass lines, sometimes learning to hum the parts of songs I especially liked. My bass playing is definitely influenced by horns, guitars, and percussion at the least.
As most always my T-Bird family triggers cool memories good things long dormant in my cache of expeiences- in this case one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes "A Passage for Trumpet". Because a I think of the trombone as a "fretless cousin" to the trumpet.

But I was reflecting on my musical past and how I leaned more toward jazz than rock when It came to what I enjoyed playing as opposed to listening. But in the late-70's and 80's jazz was not that common in public hangouts and venues as was rock.

And so I recall that scene where a down and out trumpet player, circa 1960 when jazz ruled, hears Gabriel himself play and it is a beautiful run heard at around around time stamp 3:09 in the clip below-

2009 I think. Which is I guess relatively late. The band started in the 70s, & their first album was released in late 1978.

But they are done now as a unit, unfortunately. A great band in their day.
I remember the "Beds Are Burning" song and seeing ads for the band in 1980's music magazines- quite impressed with that 2009 performance, very energetic and soulful-

I read a short paperback book on Radiohead about how they got together up to their breakthrough LP "OK Computer". If you are a Radiohead fan, I highly recommend it. Bass-player Colin Greenwood (brother of Jonny Greenwood on guitar) used some of the money they got from that seminal LP sales to pay for bass lessons. That blew me away because I consider him one of my favorite bass players and that he used his well deserved riches to further his music knowledge just made me appreciate him and his playing more.

His playing on this is a good example of why I hold him in high regard -

Really like the keyboard sound in this one-

Cool vid - yes, I have all their recordings and also ones that Thom York & Jonny Greenwood are on. Saw The Smile in '22 - this concert specifically! Great show but I can't say much good about the venue (Bill Graham Auditorium) - a big ugly concrete box... 1st & last time I see a concert there. Thom played a number of classic vintage basses - and played them well! The sax guy was their 'opening act'... solo w/loopers. He was ok.

That’s a rare find, and in super clean condition.
Way worth the investment to get it up and running.
I had a Nomad 210 bass cab I found used for 50 bucks back in the early 2000’s.
Loved it.
