I think you will find that their terms of service do not require them to forewarn. Perhaps that will have some effect on their client retention.

Not actually comparable. From what I understand, they are not preventing anyone from getting their files, they have just shut down third party hosting. More like being informed that the parking spot that is not in your rental agreement that you have been using will now require a fee.
ah... ok. I had the impression that they couldn't retrieve their stuff

Thanks to our fellow members for complaining about the change I logged in and was able to download all of my pictures from my libraries.
If they just decided to blindside users with the fee then that is skeevy at best.

Skeevy, I love it!, i have not heard that term/slang used in eons.
A personal favorite for sure.

Just glad i never used them.

Tort Celluloid picks? Fender.
:) just a joke

That is the method I used when I added Dunlop to this bass. I used a grinder wheel and made quick work of it. Just move slow and check at certain points to be sure you don't go too far.

What's that neck plate ? Bacardi Bat logo ?

Bandwidth is not free. Every time a page with a linked photo is loaded, bandwidth is used. People do not work for free. Keeping a hosting company operating requires people to work there. Electricity is not free. Keeping servers working to be available when you want to access a file needs electricity.

I am always amazed by the outrage when something is not free. Even if it used to be free, you should have no expectation that it remains that way. Read the terms of service when you sign up for a "free account". First is that terms can be changed at anytime without notice. Second, you give up many rights to what you are doing. For instance, by signing up for TB, I have given up my copyright to what I write here. The rule of thumb is if something is free, it is very likely that YOU are the product; which is to say, if the service is free, in all probability information about you is being sold to someone else.

If there is no profit available, you will find that there is no service available. Consider your bands - would you pay to play in venues? You provide the service of live music and assume that you will get paid for that. There are very few that will absorb the costs of providing a service of any kind without expecting to get paid for the provision of that service.

For what it is worth, I pay for not only my internet service, but also for email and online storage. Some of you may think me a sucker for doing so, however, it substantially changes the contractual arrangement in my favour. I wouldn't have it any other way. I give up no rights to the contents of my email or files.

Will photobucket go out of business because of this? Who knows, but if they can't generate enough revenue to cover the costs of operating, that would have happened regardless.
Bait and Switch is Bait and Switch no matter how you coat it. And the unfortunate thing here is the cost of the bait and switch is mind boggling.

I signed up to use their product because it was free, not because it was better. After nearly a decade of being a loyal customer abiding by their business model they've decided overnight to charge me $400 per year to continue to access a grand total of 40 pictures that I've posted there. Think about that, $400 for storage and access to 40 pictures. By comparison I pay .99 cents a month to iTunes for cloud storage and access to thousands of pictures, and tens of thousands of documents.

Can Photobucket do this? Sure they can, only a fool would say they can't.
Should they have done it at such a steep price, without any thought of grandfathering and totally devoid of actual bandwidth? Sure, if they want to completely drive away 95% of their user base and be known as the schmucks that destroyed a viable business and in the process totally effed up every blog and board on the net that posted their images.

Think of all the great pics on this thread (and across the net) that have been used to show a solution or a neat fix or a tutorial or just to share something new. A year from now (or sooner) you'll go to one of those links looking for insight and where the picture used to be it will say "image not available". That's gonna suck. All because someone wanted to switch their previously free product over to a pay to play model that's priced on a whim and reeks of massive greed.

What are the limits if any on media storage on TB? You can upload media already, but if you want to contribute to the cost of upkeep/bandwith/storage, much better to pay the $30 p.a. TB membership fee and host your bass-related pix here.

Silly me, I was having trouble understanding thinking that TB was Tera Bytes rather than Talk Bass (which becomes obvious at the end).

Has anyone actually hear these new vintage Epiphone vintages? Hate to order one before hearing, but 36 month finance at Sweetwater is up soon
I'm with Kat on this one. If yer loaded & ready to go... just go! When it get's there, be kind to the packing materials so you can use them for the return if need be... but you're already generally familiar with what your looking' at, so...

As @kat888 stated, anything Murdoch related...................
I typically don't wish ill on anyone.
Hope they crash and burn.

Actually, I suspect that they have been bleeding money for sometime and a backer has pulled the plug on additional funding having finally figured out that "users -> ??? -> profits" is just not a viable business plan. My suspicion is that the accountants were brought in to find the actual costs of each type of account then it was calculated what price needs to be asked to fire the appropriate set of customers to move into the black. At the end, phtobucket will be sold to someone else as a now profitable company - my estimate the sales will happen in 12-18 months.
