On the question of nuts, if you're paying Gibson prices you would expect a properly cut bone nut. The cheaper more mass produced Epi will likely have a synthetic premoulded nut in a colour which matches the rest of the hardware, or in the case of the PRO IV and PRO V, a brass nut painted black.

The Gibsons, at least the later ones, have Corian nuts.

No idea why people thought that cherry was a color option - Neither the preliminary info, nor the Epi website has mentioned that color option, and they ought to know best...

Anyway, I would vote both an Alpine White and an Ebony bird - White looks sexy under stage lights and Ebony just looks classy with the chrome hardware.

I actually like my Rays but they are very unforgiving basses if you have less than perfect left hand technique. If you don't fret right at the nut side of the fret is clack, clank, buzz all day long. You can EQ a lot of that out and then slap some Black Beauties or Flats on it to help but it's not nearly as forgiving as playing my TBird even loaded with SS strings. For me and my horrible finger technique the Stingray is more a studio session tool that can be played sitting down and looking at the neck vs my Thunderbird, which is a great jump around the stage, look at the audience and band member bass.

Yep, that is me and a Stingray. I haven't kept one for exactly for that reason. I think I sound like a lot of falling pots and pans using one. A couple of other bass players who have seen me using one have told me I don't and that I sound quite acceptable with one, but it puts me off.
I find I get on much better with a G&L Asat or L2K if I want that kind of tone. I keep an Asat for that reason (an L2K looks too normal for me).

Good question. All I know is that it’s white and holds the strings at the headstock end.

That photo helps a lot. It confirms that yes, the bass was inspected and that it was made in China and most importantly - that you shouldn't throw it away!

And it's got the gold serial number sticker. Which means it was refurbished by a US company whose name escapes me. Caused me some doubt & confusion when I tried looking up the serial number.

@BklynKen, I spent some time on the train reading about corian vs bone ... and the consensus was bone is nicer but if corian works for you, there's no reason to change it. I suppose corian *looks* more like bone, but anyway, I was only trying to posit a reason Gibsons seem to have white nuts and Epis seem to have black nuts. I'm not bothered either way.

A perfectly good reason. The bloke who is going to do my Epi nut told me he uses bone - anything else is extra. I'm sure he only uses bone from wombats who died of natural causes.
