1 3/4 nut width/Thunderbird pick ups. Basically a set neck P-Bass with Thunderbird pick ups. Cheaper than a Ric. I have seen them in $700 range in great shape. If the neck were thinner, I would own one and have modded it to my taste.

Seriously considering building the JAEbird in Asia. My Taiwanese buddy/ex partner has a South China factory that can do it (he's a major supplier to Williams Sonoma so the bang for buck quality is top notch on everything). CNC, wood shop, metal shop, plating facility, finish line, and excellent R&D and sourcing people plus logistics.

Planning a trip back next spring to see what's what. With the right marketing and a reasonable price worldwide sales could be good. Still a lot of JAE fans out there!

I'd be very interested in something along that line!

Oh, I wasn't shopping for them specifically. I was just lookin' at all things T-bird on eBay when they presented themselves to me. It's not uncommon for folks 'round these parts, to be lookin' for 'em, so I posted the link.

I hadn't heard about the neck variation situation. I'll be keeping that in mind fo sho! I welcome all comments regarding that Ric. Unfortunately, I'm still a ways off from buying, so if anybody has a reason I should take it off my list, I'd like to hear it (factual stuff... not opinion stuff). You won't piss me off... you'll be helping me make an informed decision, which I will appreciate
I've tried the Ric forum. There's too many tools in that box(). I like you guys better, and value your opinions more... plus... let's face it... I would far rather have it be a T-bird than a Ric, anyway! Gibson just never saw fit to make one to accommodate my Dali-esque physique

That Ric 4003 you posted is a really nice looking bass... If the neck feels good to you, I would definitely say go for it - But always try out before buying, as their necks apparently are all over the place from what I read...

The old 4001's on the other hand had really skinny necks back to front and minimal taper - Can't quite remember the nut width on my old one, but I believe it wasn't as narrow as a Gibson or Epi Classic Pro (1.5") - At least I remember it being wider.

That hurts my eyes. Definitely not the work of a car designer...or designer of any kind IMO. There's so much visually wrong going on it's difficult to decide where to start the crit, it's just one incongruous element after another.

Well either you like Ric's or you don't - Kinda like Thunderbirds...

I've been eyeballin' those! I've seen a couple good deals fly by on them recently. I haven't had any luck finding good intel on them. Photos I've seen were kiiiinda encouraging, but none of them were good enough to get an idea if the necks were really chunky or not (hard to capture that feature on film). Thanks for the heads up! I'll keep them on my radar
