I had relatively narrow musical interests as a teen (like most), but as I got older, my tastes broadened . A lot.

Kiss, like many others, have some great songs. But, I have to separate the music from the individual(s) because I have a personal dislike for the individuals. Also in that category is Neil Young, Alannah Myles, Pearl Jam, Guns N Roses/Axl Rose... There are many whom I don't think I have heard anything but the music, and so have no opinion on the individuals. And that is how I prefer it.

C'mon people! Kiss wasn't THAT bad! Geesh! Kiss Alive was a great album, overdubs and all. Those early tunes had some great hooks to them. Paul Stanley has the quintessential rock n roll voice. Sure, Gene was no Geddy Lee or JPJ, but his bass lines were more melodic than most hard rock bassists were putting out at the time. Not to mention Ace Frehley was underrated , his solos always fit the song and were always tasteful and not full of wankery. I'd rather play with a guy like him than, say, a Vai or Malmstein. Wankers.

My dad always had the radio on when we were driving, and it felt like we were on the road more than we were at home. I learned at a young age to respect all music, even bands/genres that I don't like, because they must have done something right to make it on the radio.

I don't really listen to or care what celebrities say. Most are in their self absorbed bubble.

Because it was a great outlet for teenage angst, it was raw , it had passion, it was real and whether one wants to believe it or not hardcore and punk gets pretty complex and is trickier to play with odd high speed timing changes. I could walk out of a mosh pit covered in "real" blood and feel as though I'd been saved, better alternative than acting out by making negative choices and paying for it later. Ahh hell who am I to explain?, I'll come back in a week and hopefully this Kiss thing will have blown over by then. Didnt mean to start a war.

Precisely my point. By opening their mouths, they can only alienate a segment of their fans. The most intelligent comment I have ever heard from a celebrity was many years ago, Tom Hanks was asked his opinion on politics and his answer was something to the effect of: why do you care what I think; I'm an actor. And I am sick and tired of all the reality TV celebutards; they just make the world a dumber place.

Now you kids, get off my lawn.

The idea of finding a bass from 1970 makes my wallet hurt. I like your 50th birthday idea! That gives me 2 years to suss it out;)

On the Kiss thing...I just thought it was funny I split for a few hours and that was the main topic when I got back. Didn’t mean to dis any band.

I don’t think anyone was getting into a serious discussion about dogging anything. I agree with what you’re saying though. If there’s a band we don’t like or get, it can be more fun to find out why someone else does like em than to just say ‘it sucks.’

Who does that? I’m not strictly speaking a Kiss fan, but I thought it was a pretty great gimmick they came up with and I thought Gene was a cool bass player. Came up with great parts. Detroit Rock City comes to mind

I'm not a a KISS fan, but good bass line, good tune.

Punk for musicianship? X's drummer, DJ Bonebreak, their guitarist Billy Zoom... Klaus Flouride, bass player for Dead Kennedys... Devo, all of them... There are in fact some great examples of talented players in the punk realm.
