Thunderbird Club

Ive been keeping a mental list of some of the strings folks seem to like, specifically for my ‘14. I was to use it on country/roots gigs and wouldn’t mind taming the aggression a bit. The ‘02 will stay super aggressive. Ordered Cobalt flats but in the meantime, ran by Sam Ash and grabbed a set of Black Beauties. Just put em on and they’re pretty nice! E string has a better, thumpy attack than the Lo Riders on this bass (and I kinda love Lo Riders). Solid, articulate. Time will tell, but I’m liking em so far.

I really like the Black Beauties... If it weren't for their high price, I would have them on all my basses - But re-stringing 20 basses with them would be a costly affair. So I either use SS Rotosound Swing Bass strings, or Rotosound Roto's, which are fairly cheap to buy.

My brother commuted in central London on a bicycle for years, and at least three times he was hit by cars and thrown into the road, only to have the drivers either drive off or get out and start on him for daring to touch their precious vehicle!

f-ing door-slammers

Did it! And got both my questions answered!
Lifted a bit of the new serial number sticker and the original number was underneath with just the LAST few digits scraped off (or whatever the technical term is for what they do.) So I could see from the original number that my VS is actually a 2016. The 2017 on the sticker must have been when it was reassigned.

The last couple of numbers in the serial aren't that important anyway, as they don't say anything about the production date and place of manufacture...

Mine has the sticker with the new serial number and then a stamped imprint of "2nd"... but you have to hold it just the right way in the light to be able to read it, otherwise it simply looks like a small problem with the finish in that spot. When I unboxed and was searching for some horrible deformity that made it a Factory 2nd, I noticed that area and stared at it from several angles before I could finally make out what was there. Then I saw the barely visible scuffs on the edge and back of the lower horn and thought... Are you kidding me, that's nothing! They actually looked worse in the ad pics. I got lucky with this one!

You can get really lucky with those factory 2nd's - Most often it's just instruments that failed the quality control due to minimal imperfections in the finish.

I have this Limited Edition Silverburst, which is a factory 2nd due to a little blemage on the upper bout:

Don't like cars but not teally a big bicycle fan either as I'm sick of nearly being killed, or screamed at by lunatics riding on the footpath or running red lights mowing down pedestrians.

Also don't understand why a bell is not compulsory,

Many cyclists give us (cyclists) a bad name - but then, compared to drivers?... motorcyclist? (and I'm all three) ... a distant 3rd by any standards with the botton-line being the dynamic responsibility of not endangering life. I can imagine the rare 'cyclist hitting pedestrian and killing them', but compared to drivers? Not even fit to be a comparison.

My wife wouldn’t have lunch there because it was ‘too hippie’ :)

I’ve been thinking of all the false starts I’ve had with getting a bass in the last year. I reckon I’ve hesitated a little long on about 4 basses and missed out by minutes or hours. Around August I was super keen on a Jack Casady, then went to the Sydney GTG of the OzBass forum and played an Artcore with flats... and got thrown into doubt.

Then I found an Epiphone NR, but the guy still hasn’t got back to me!
Then I found a Pelham Blue Epi EB3, but the guy was moving and I had to get it in a very short time frame that I couldn’t (or wouldn’t) meet.

I’ve been looking for a used Classic Pro while doing the ol’ “yes I will”... “no I won’t”... on the Vintage Pro. The VP decision has been taken out of my hands and the Classic has become scarce and the only ones I’ve seen for months seem to want full whack new price for used. Nah.

Then this 2011 Gibson shows up for about $300 less than I’ve seen for a Gibson. I’m the first to reply, the guy replies and seems a real good guy - we strike a bit of a rapport. I am a little worried because it is so far from home and I would generally like to see a bass before spending 4 figures. Anyway he gets some quotes on insured delivery. I figure sitting at home wondering isn’t getting me any closer to a result. So I pull the trigger, and the T’Bird was delivered right on the scheduled date with no problem, and is absolutely beautiful.

It’s almost as if this bird chose me. :D

When I was 15/16 I decided I wanted a Gibson bass... it took 40 years, but I got there.

Around here, these are the things you gotta be careful of. Most people ride them because they lost their drivers license from DUI's. They ride on the sidewalk, nearly running people over, they'll ride in the middle of the road going 5 km/h, they ride them drunk too. There's even an 'EBike biker gang' around here!!

Did you have anything to do with the new tax, V? ;)

Happily no. I think it's more than a bit excessive really and the folks that want to drink that kind of stuff should be able to at their own risk - But, we Sin Tax ciggies and alcohol lot too, so......It's also worth noting that it only applies to Seattle city limits (were Will (Gaolee) lives) not to the surrounding suburbs, I live in Des Moines, a bit south and far more affordable. Seattle itself is an expensive city to live in, but there are lots of folks working in the various tech companies located in South Lake Union area that enjoy very high paying jobs, Bellevue, and most of the entire East Side of Lake Washington is even more affluent......Bill Gates country, and a trip there generally involves braving some of the worst drivers anywhere!
Regardless, this is an expensive part of the country to live in, land and house values only go up, my parent's home sold for $24,000 in 1966, now worth over $560,000!

My cousin moved out there to work for Microsoft about 5 years ago, I think he's in an apartment, but I'd say he's living comfortably, that's for sure!

I recently became friends with a Seattle transplant here in MI. He's dating my wife's friend who's also our neighbor. Nice guy, recently divorced. He sold his three houses in Seattle and is flush with cash and is spoiling my wife's friend. He left because of the super high cost of living and he wanted a change after the divorce. If the relationship craters he said he'll leave MI.

As for the sin taxes...

It just hurts businesses since those who come into the city will just be sure to bring in what they'll need while in the city whether it's cigs or sugary drinks or whatever... residents will also stock up on the sin tax stuff whenever they're out of the city. Sometimes it even causes a drop in tax revenue for the city. Time will tell.
