Funny. Conversely, if you hear someone here calling it ‘football’, you get much the same reaction. When in Rome....Well the 'S' word may be 'British' in origin but it's not a word normal British people use, to the extent that if you do hear it's actually shocking. It is a term used as a sneer to denigrate people -- it is dripping with condescension, privilege and loathing, and functions as a form of hate speech.
Just thought I'd mention it.
Rugby is a town in Warwick, England. The story says a group of students was playing football (soccer) and on picked up the ball and ran with it giving birth to the game and Rugby Union. What is ironic is that although soccer is known as football in most of England, in the north Rugby league is referred to as football. Then there's Australian rules football! So as with anything English or related to the British Commonwealth, nothing is that simple...I was looking around and the origins of the names football, soccer, etc. Nothing terribly clear, but it seems 'soccer' goes back to the UK in the 1800s, and Rugby is officially called Rugby Football? And historically, American Football is actually called Gridiron Football?

Funny, I too lived in England (Warwick) and that is what the locals used to fervently advocate...Er, sorry, no. I'm married to a Geordie, am an honorary Northerner and lived in Scotland and the North. Football is called football the length and breadth of the British Isles, even in Wales, where Rugby Union is the national game. What they do do is refer to both Rugby codes, Union and League as 'Rugby'.

The story of the journey there and unknowingly having tickets to the Super Bowl waiting is made even more remarkable in that you serendipitously got to witness the Dolphins be the only NFL team to ever culminate a perfect season, by winning that game. Something that has not been replicated in the 40+ years that have followed.I drove cross country to L.A. in Jan 1973 partly through a major blizzard to join my brother in a band. When I got to where he was staying I knocked on the door and my dad opened it. He'd just flown out from Miami. First thing he said was, "I have 50 yard line tickets for the Super Bowl tomorrow". My response was, "Great, let's sell them!".
All three of us did go to the game. My dad had finagled the tickets of course, and he won $750 on the game....and I got introduced to smog which was very visible looking across the Coliseum at the players on the field .
About 10 years later the Dolphins got to the SuperBowl again, this time at the Rose Bowl, and a similar thing happened. I didn't go that time because the band I was in was shooting a never to be seen video in a dive bar that day. Rick "Mad Dog" Madigan used my ticket.

Seems so eerily quiet here, i've drifted off into David Lynch land. Love this film and song.
I'm no fan of football; I have no favorite team. But I like a good story, I like seeing underdogs succeed, and I like seeing an @sshole dethroned. That all happened last night and I was glad I watched the last 15 minutes. It was very exciting. The great sport debacle of 2018. Because it’s REALLY important

Exactly. That's mostly what was so thrilling to watch.I just might. It’s always fun to watch the underdogs have their day![]()

Never mind intelligence. We have come to a unanimous conclusion that it's about attitude. You are like the Forrest Gump of rock (not in terms of intelligence but how he had a knack for "showing up" at major historic events).![]()
