People were dropping American V8s in there to make them more reliable. Pontiac 301s were used commonly for this. Shame...

Not really. More power, better fuel economy, fewer problems. They did the same to Austin Healeys. I'm not a purist, as you can tell.

And it was tatty. As a roadster should have been back when. My first car was a TR-2. It was reliable when it ran. Not so much when it didn't, but I sure learned a whole lot about how things worked from that car. Worked, not works now, because it was a 1954 and nothing about it was modern.

Tatty is being polite! Rust with white trim, glorified go cart it's a wonder we survived .

It's a very old joke that I believe came back with US servicemen stationed in England during the second war and one that is very common among British car aficionados.
Glad I remembered it cause really like Christine's sucking joke. Better than the fridge joke imo.

I'm pretty clueless on a lot of subject matter that comes up here, so when it was discussed originally, i got a pretty good laugh out of it.

Nah to more power or fuel efficiency on the E-type (power on the Healey yes), it was the 3 SU carburetors, ignition and overheating (South FLA) they were trying to move away from. Unlike the Pontiac or the Healey (BMC truck engine), the XK was a true racing thoroughbred racing motor.
