Are they expensive? Rare?

ish - about 2k new. Used 1-2k depending. Not rare really, but not common. Supposedly a neck to die for.

The basses (and electric guitars) from the 60s and earlier are rare and expensive. And some are, well odd looking... so I love them!

They are indeed.
They use Australian timbers as well as the usual Guitar & Bass timbers.

Mostly concentrate on acoustic guitars these days.

I don't know all that much about 'em myself. I'm led to believe they are a very fine quality instrument. If I were to guess, I'd say Westone was inspired by Maton, not the other way around. They've had a respectable group of users over the years... but the only guy that comes to mind at the moment, is Graeham Goble of Little River Band. I'm sure our Australian contingency can tell you more

The guy from Violent Femmes uses a JB4 bass for stage work.
