How’s the Cayman ? That’s probably the one I’d go for (but that’s not happening really)
I've driven just about every Porsche model made in the last 40 years. I'd take a 2016 Cayman GT4 over just about every other Porsche made. It has the perfect balance of serious track racing capability and daily driving at a price point well below the 911 Turbo or its big brother the GT3. Plus you can fit two sets of golf clubs or gig bags in the rear trunk and a 410 bass cab in the front trunk and still have room for a driver and passenger, can't even come close to that in a 911. The Cayman (and its sibling the boxster) is the only sports car Porsche makes these days. The current 911 is very nice but is more of a GT than a sports car.

Cool wood and finish - I bet the smooth texture feels good.

It's actually really cool in person, I like the Les Paul Oversize better though, still jonesing for a black one!

Right you are. 930 was the more popular name. This is it what it looked like;
I didn't care much for the oversteer (mildly put) much..based on the Czech Tatra design, a vehicle responsible for wiping out numerous German officers for the same reason.. Wish Porsche would have marketed the 916 more seriously..

Nice 930! I won't drive one in competition or on unfamiliar twisty roads. The turbo lag in those things was insane combined with the rear weight bias, just plain deadly. Think of the Cayman GT4 as the modern day 916 - mid engine from a 911, light, low to the ground with a race ready suspension all at a price point less than a standard 911.

Yeah, the right combination. I guess you can only "milk" the rear engine topology for so long. Don't get me wrong, I love them but feel more comfortable in mid engine cars. If you recall, the 917 was unstoppable. Mine had the 3 liter engine. Soon thereafter they went to the 3.3. Amazing cars. Beautiful collection you got there.

Good to hear from an owner. I considered the Cayman (& Boxster) ‘the sweet spot’ in the range.

Have you compared an F Type to the Cayman? Top Gear suggested the rear boot was laughable.

I know nothing about cars. but i know what it's like to drive a Cayman.

A couple weeks ago @theFixer and a couple others asked for a pic of my other hobby - cars, specifically Porsche cars. Well I was cleaning the garage yesterday and had to back em out, so here's a pic of three in the driveway (need a bigger driveway to get the fourth one in)...

And here's the fourth one...

Needless to say, my wife likes my bass habit better, it's a lot cheaper. ;)

Very, very nice!

A tatty MG going sideways was always my style. A Porsche was out of my range, pretty much always. I did get to drive one, though. Scared the crap out of its owner while I was doing it. The bike is faster up to its top speed anyway. Low mass is its own reward. Most of my noise making is amplified these days. I don't remember when I hit the ton. Probably only a couple times in the last month or so.

Have you ever gone off the road backwards?

Looks like the tower of jank is going to get a Hartke head that got pulled out of some kind of combo. It's 120 watts, which means probably not so great, and it doesn't have any kind of enclosure. So, I will make a box for it out of plywood. Because it's the tower of jank, I might find some awful color of house paint for the box once it's built. Then again, there's some black Duratex floating around here somewhere in the basement. That's a little more dignified. Next step, actual functioning drivers in the tower itself.

I've driven a couple of the Jag F types and the six cylinder version is the smart buy between it an the V8 Jag. The V8 just has more power than the car can deal with, touch the throttle at just the wrong time and you're wrapped around a telephone pole. The F Type 6 cylinder is the sweet spot for that car. It's a great drivers car with beautiful lines, a beautiful interior, a beautiful engine, and wonderful handling. I've heard a few people complain about reliability but I don't have any first hand knowledge of issues. The boot is smaller than tiny, I don't think you could get a bass tube amp in there. It's also at roughly the same price point as the Cayman GTS. Not sure how it will do on resale.

By comparison, the Cayman GTS is a phenomenal drivers car that is as much at home on the track as it is in the grocery store parking lot. The Cayman looks more muscular but the Jag looks more sexy, so you choose which one visually attracts you most. The Jag interior also looks a bit more high end vs the utilitarian Porsche interior. The Porsche engine and exhaust note are a step above the Jag and IMHO the Cayman GTS (and to a lesser degree, the Boxster) perform better both on the track and on the street. The Cayman is dead reliable and the GTS version seems to be holding its value very well.

So I'd go with the 2015 or 2016 Cayman GTS vs the same year Jag F-Type. I don't personally like the 2017 or newer Cayman as much because Porsche did away with the flat 6 engine and installed a twin turbo four cylinder. I think the HP is the same or better and the car may be a bit lighter and handle a bit better, but I don't like the sound or feel of the new engine.

Edit: just found this clip...

LOL - backwards, frontwards and sideways. There's a reason Porsche 911 drivers use the term "Never Lift". The car is capable of amazing traction in a turn at high speeds, but if you so much as think about letting up on the gas pedal in a corner at speed it'll whip that tail around and swap ends before you know what happened.:woot:
Fortunately not so with the Cayman.
