My thought is that a 50W tube amp sounds warm and fat. And because of the natural compression and overdrive of tubes, would seem quite loud. And compared to 500 class D watts, could seem just as loud.



I chatted with the guitar department manager about it the other day. I need to make some time to go in and try everything out. Perhaps when I pick up the EB-3 (getting the free set up done on it along with a Hipshot bride and having a set of BEAD DDTs put on). I could pick it up first thing one morning and use it to try out the amps. And I could find out who is hung over.

They are annoyingly too good in L&M. They always offer to let me take things (amps, cabs, basses) home to try out for a week or two. They know that once it is home, it is staying!

I'm right with you. I subscribed to a streaming service a few years ago. By my math, it was cheaper than what I would otherwise spend on CDs. The downside is that there are a few things that aren't there, so I buy them anyway and if I stop my subscription, I lose the music. The upside is that I have effectively unlimited music with me on my phone and I have discovered a lot of interesting music through the "radio" function that I am unlikely to have ever run across and I can be more experimental in my listening. I still buy CDs now and then, but not very many.

Spotify has exposed to hundreds of different bands. I’ll buy the occasional disc or cd to show support, but my spending on hard media has dropped to a fraction of what I used to spend. More money for concerts.

IME - a 1/2" slide towards the bridge on a Humbucker neck pup will not make a significant difference in tone. A 1/2" slide towards the bridge on the bridge pup will make a noticeable difference. Keep in mind I've only built a few basses. JIO, Carlo and Christine may have better data.

Mostly correct I think - a single coil has a narrower focus than a bucker and unless the buckers have independent coil option it literally covers more ground. The usual guide for bridge HB pu position is a T-bird IV, a Stingray, and/or a G&L L-2000. They are all going to be generally in same place.

Great Googally Moogally! I grew up a stones throw from Hardrock Quarry. Used to go fishing there with my father before
they turned it into a venue. It was a limestone quarry way back. The stone kiln is still there. I was too young to go to the concerts, but I remember listening to the Guess Who in my backyard. It was a big event and the neighborhood was all a twitter. There’s an auto auction on the site now. Fun fact: the beach sand was trucked in from Florida, and one load contained coral snake eggs. They had to shut down until they took care of the situation. I swear I saw one later that summer.

This was the largest in a while. I got to drive home 25 miles thru it. The dust was VERY thick on this one. We had a massive one that covered the entire valley a few years ago and since then the news will call even minor dust storms a Haboob. The big storms are not common but typical dust storms are nothing unusual during the summer.

I’ve never heard the term “Haboob” before.

There are some great people out in the GP, funny intelligent kind and courteous, hold on, wrong forum! No there are but holy there are some arseholes too, I bet they're all short!

I play bass for my own amusement and to disturb the neighbours. My brother and I have noise sessions when schedules permit. I would have trouble fitting a band into my schedule.

Wednesday as I was driving into Toronto to see Jeff Beck et al, I passed at least a dozen tractor trailers that were branded for the Taylor Swift Reputation Stadium tour sponsored by diet coke and Fuji film (I appreciate it anytime I see good branding). She is/was playing two nights in Toronto. I kept thinking - what could take up a dozen tractor trailers? PA/sound 1, Wardrobe 1, Microphones 1, Instruments 1, Lighting 2, what is in the other 6? Two full of glitter, 2 for rainbows, and 2 for unicorns?

Yikes! A friend at work got caught in one down there recently. It sounded frightening.

They recommend pulling all the way off the road and turning off your lights so no one thinks you are still driving. But being a man and stubborn (I repeat myself) I chose to continue driving. As @Christine pointed out it is a good idea to change all filters on your vehicle after the monsoon season has ended.

I too have the boxed set. It is brilliant; it isn't just Cleese, but Polly and Manuel who are so well done. I love the episode with the builders and Fawlty has Manuel call the builder a "hideous orangutan".

It's true - Cleese was the catalyst but all the players supported his manic-ness so well!

Back to culinary matters here at the club:

It is fresh fruit season here in Ontario. I love the fresh tomatoes this time of year. Big, flavourful (unlike the hothouse ones you get year round), and juicy. Nothing better than a tomato sandwich (toasted or not) with a little salt. Ripe so that the juice runs down your face and hands while eating. (I can hear @Christine humming the end of the Lemon Song in preparation for an ahem)

Peaches too are in season. They seem a little small this year, but juicy and sweet. I can deal with the size - just have to have two.

I love a fresh tomato. On a sandwich or a cracker - with salt and pepper. Cheese and ham optional.

And the English don’t get missed either. How about the old duck complaining about the view?

As I understand it, Basil Fawlty is based on an actual hotel owner he met in Torquay. I always enjoy the sign out front of the hotel during the credits; it never seems to say Fawlty Towers.
