Ahh, you got the Hello-Kitty treatment. They save that for special guests.Ha! I was wearing pink slippers at a plant in Japan last time around cause they were the only ones that somewhat fit..Not a happy camper...

My admin support always called ahead on my trips to make sure I got the red carpet treatment when I arrived. I'll never forget the time I was reviewing some of the upstream manufacturing operations in one of our FDA equalivant rated GMP R&D facilities. They were so proud about their preperations for my visit and in typical Japanese fashion they had every aspect of the tour planned down to the last detail and timed to the minute.
A lot of potential funding was riding on a successful tour. They had correct size safety shoes, a correct size lab coat, gloves, hair nets and even safety glasses that fit over my regular glasses. I got all gowned up and ready to go into the airlock, but before I did I asked the plant manager for a beard net. He was horrified. They didn't have any, apparently facial hair isn't very common there. So I waited while his team scrambled to the nearest hospital for a handful of beard nets. Needless to say that threw the entire schedule off by about 30 minutes.
All ended well, I got my beard net and they got their funding. Sure I could have worn a hair net over my beard (wouldn't be the first time) but they wanted everything perfect. The culture is all about perfection and precision and acknowledgement of organizational hierarchy. They just weren't going to let me walk around a production floor wearing a hair net on my face and be seen by hundreds of workers. It would have shown disrespect (although I'd have been fine with it). I let them follow the protocol they were most comfortable with - when in Rome.
