Thunderbird Club

This is strange and OT, but an Eskimo Brothers fan asked me to try out this bass. I told him it’s a real nice instrument and he said, “That’s good, because it’s yours now!”
I’m cool with that :)

Congratulations Mark!

Lovely Rick!

What a groovy offering!!!! Cool fan you got there.
I’m certainly not complaining :)
The tricky part is going from a ‘Bird to...basically anything else feels odd to me these days. The Rick has a cool throaty midrange and nice punch, but my main two ‘Birds go way deeper and even higher if I want that. I’ll try the Rick at a gig tomorrow and see what I think, but based on this rehearsal I just did...kinda wishing it had a bit mors low end. It’s a really nice bass though!

Perfect description of the tone differences between those two basses.

Certain people were just born to play Ric’s and I love the way those people sound...I just like chunkier lows live...might look into a set of Joe Bardens or something :)

Thanks for the idea! We have a Pelican dealer here in town and they have a 1750 in stock. I am going to take the 50.5 inch TBVP in to see if it fits. I have a Pelican case for another sporting good and it is great.
I can't get Coffin Cases (dead?) or BaCH Musik (August in EU) to respond to emails.

Back from purgatory . . .
I never heard from BaCH Musik nor Coffin. The Pelican didn't work (too heavy and expensive), the Plano was too narrow and I wasn't willing to spend>$150US yet.

I did find a gig bag on A****n from "American Music"
for $79.95US and it holds my 50.5 inch long Epi TBVP

I had a Ric for a while. I was not born to play one. Everything was great about it otherwise.

He gave you a roadworthy case for it too, right? I wouldn't take it if it didn't come with the case.

;)

Thats a hell of a gift. Conga rats!

Oddly enough, that turned out to be the case with me and my latest Ric, which has been traded off.
I dare not post a pic of the latest acquisition though. I think it's illegal here.
But i will say it was already liberated. So i don't care about what is still original on it, it's a players bass.

I had a 2017 Epiphone Thunderbird IV and now have a 2006 Gibson Thunderbird. The Gibson is slightly lighter and better balanced and the pickups produce more volume. The fit, finish and looks are the same. The playability and feel of the instruments are the same. Same thin neck. Same tone and sound to my ears. Same crappy 3-point bridge. The Epiphone has a bolt-on neck compared to the Gibson through-neck. I prefer bolt-on so it can be adjusted should it ever need it. The Gibson (used) cost 3 times the Epiphone (new). Which is better? IDK, depends. If you're on a budget, the Epiphone will absolutely get the job done well!

BTW, I was going to put this very cool metal pickguard on my Gibson. It came off the Epiphone and the holes don't line up with the Gibson. I was set on filling the existing holes in the Gibson and drilling new ones, but I decided this was a bad plan and went ahead and ordered a pick guard that will fit the existing holes. The Epiphone pickguard is available if someone wants a deal.View attachment 3158814

I'm interested in the guard if Nocturnal doesn't take it. I have a gutted Goth that I'm turning into a Fenderbird thingie.
You're lucky yours is a recent Epi. The old ones have big, chunky necks. I have a beautiful white/chrome Epi Custom Shop that is just too beefy for me, neck-wise. It's basically been relegated to wall art.:-(

Same here, the way it feels is just wrong for me, I don't know exactly why.
+1. Wanted one sooo bad in the early 80s and then got one. Not impressed with the bottom end, had a pair humbucker wired J pickups installed in the neck position a la Roger Glover... then had the frets pulled out..idiot, should have just sold it...they looked SO cool... the styling was so radical back in the day but (imho) dated today...they also seemed so much better engineered than a 7ender in every aspect.
many players dabbled with them for awhile and then moved on to something else..
