Today was bass maintenance day, started at 8:00am and didn't finish until midnight. Took about 40 basses down, cleaned each one thoroughly, oiled fretboards, changed batteries and strings where needed, tuned up and played the same 3 songs on each bass - The Shape You're In by Clapton, Cocaine by Clapton and Sunshine of Your Love by Cream (what can I say, I just happened to have a Clapton CD in the player at the time).
General observation - Gibson (and Epiphone) basses just flat out rock! The Blonde SG Supreme and the Eppi VP Bird are real standouts, followed closely by the Anniversary Bird and the 2013 EB5. There's just so much bottom end on the SG and such a cutting voice on the VP, pure heaven. Of course most of my other stuff (Fender, Spector, Alembic, Warwick, Squier, Musicman, Reverend, Danelectro, etc) sounded good to great (hardly a slacker in the bunch) but I just feel so at home with the SG and VP.
And to think, just four short years ago I didn't even have a Gibby or Eppi in the room. The last six bass purchases I've made have all been Gibson products. Wish I had found them sooner, it might have saved me a lot of money and time chasing my preferred sound. I'm so glad Gibson Company looks like it might get a second breath, sure hope they keep the Gibby and Eppi offerings coming!
