Thunderbird Club

Y'know, putting that here is like waving a red flag in front of a bull. You know I'm going to leak out and say something that might get me banned.
Type it out. Take a deep breath. If it’s still a good idea, hit post. If you have doubts, delete and move on. Usually works for me unless I’ve had one too many bourbons or beers.

Yesterday (20 Oct) my Dad would’ve turned 95. As a happy turn of events one of his favourite performers (John Williamson) was doing a show at my local clubs entertainment room.
So I went to see my first Country music show. And loved it.

Bought some merch and got a CD autographed, and also a book that JW did an ‘in memory of’ inscription in for me.

I went with a few from our little group. We had our first performance of ‘Aussie Favourites’ that morning. Went off pretty well, a couple of blues but the people seemed happy... which is the point after all. We only have one JW song at the moment “True Blue” (which we have a little trouble with) so it was all in all very opportune. I can see that we may add another couple and maybe our country/folk/with a dash of pop phase may continue for a while.

Excellent way to remember your Dad.

I have to admit I didn’t know of John Williamson. My wife is the country fan in our house. I’ll go with her to shows and usually enjoy them. She really likes that Aussie country guy with the tall hot wife. I’m a huge Paul Kelly fan. Anyway, thanks for posting about someone we otherwise wouldn’t know about. We’ll give him a listen.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath, which, kinda obviously, also came before the band changing its name.

Though I have heard votes for You really got me as first song; and The Who as the first heavy metal band.

But I also read a thing with John Lennon trying to lay claim on behalf of The Beatles.
Helter Skelter was fairly heavy.

According to the Jeff Beck quote, Inna Gadda precedes Sunshine of your love by about 6 months. So maybe it's actually no Sunshine without Gadda.

Looks like Vanilla Fudge released Keep me Hanging (which to my ears is more psychedelic or trippy than heavy metal) about 4 months after Jeff Beck heard Iron Butterfly perform Gadda. So unless there's earlier copies out there I think Iron Butterfly still takes it.

Vanilla Fudge were a white soul/rock band who did trippy psychedelic covers of classic songs of their day; Motown, Beatles, Top-40 pop and this one - one of my favorites. Love this '06 remastered version with the trippy intro. (not on the original and very Floyde-esk)

I think Iron Butterfly does have a pretty good claim, but again, I'm going to throw in Blue Cheer's Summertime Blues which was recorded in '67 and released in January '68. I Don't Live Today was put out in May '67 and I think is a good precursor to the heavier music soon to come, with the pounding drum intro and dark lyrics, and even Happening Ten Years Time Ago by the Yardbirds in '66, with it's chugging descending chords is indicative and an early example.

And same could be said for Beck's Bolero, also recorded in '66.
