Thunderbird Club

Certainly what sticks in my mind as the first 'rap' song.

I have argued many times that Black Sabbath was more jazz than blues. At least the first couple of albums.

I would also argue that Deep Purple was the original heavy metal... Or maybe MC5 (Kick Out the Jams!) Maybe MC5 was the original Punk rock?

First Shock rocker - Alice Cooper (the band, not the individual).

Louis Jordan invented Rap AND Rock'n'Roll back in the 1940s...and he stole it from the jug bands of the 1920s...

Hey again Bird People! So, quite a few pages back I mentioned my foray into 'Birds by grabbing the cheapest Epi I could find, and it was suggested that I might want to take a look at a Pro or Vintage Pro. I went ahead and scored a cheap Pro (the passive one with Gibson pups), and wow! I can't wait to take this one to practice.

I drove by the practice space earlier today to give it a test run through my rig, and the difference was huge. So much more body to every note, and it came with a case! It's tempting me to rethink my current lineup of basses :)

Thanks again for your advice! I still have a 2017 EB bass on the way (I got one, but the bridge pup was kaput), and I can't imagine keeping it over the TB. It might be a bit more versatile, but that's not really what I'm looking for anyway. Plus, I just feel cooler with the 'Bird, so now more people than my wife will think the same. That's what really matters :)

And Black Sabbath was the first metal band :P

I bet you’re going to find the Tbird is very versatile.
And yeah I’m with you on Sabbath.

Congrats!!! Enjoy the new Bird!!

Heavy Metal. Google is telling me that John Lennon was claiming Day Tripper (1965) as ‘one of the first’ heavy metal songs.
What do you lot think? I don’t think so although Paul is listed as playing ‘fuzz bass’.
That bass doesn't sound too fuzzy to me, but what do I know. I have been playing that song forever in cover bands and never thought of it as particularly heavy at all.

LOL - keep in mind he also thought Yoko would be a great vocal addition to the band. Nope, not even a contender in the birth of Heavy Metal.

All my searching uncovered Iron Butterfly singing In A Gadda Divida in April of 1967 (possibly even earlier than that) with record releases in early 1968, very close to Black Sabbath launching their Metal tunes on their second album in 1968 also. It kinda comes down to wether or not you consider Gadda hard enough to be Metal (IMHO In 1968 it was viewed as a clear departure from just about anything else that was being played). At that same time in musical history, the Beatles had just released "All You Need is Love" (not exactly Heavy Metal, Metal or even Hard Rock). I think the first ones to cross the line were IB followed very closely by BS and then by LZ and DP.

But any way you look at it, 1968 was a great year for music and a great year for muscle cars!

If you play a 'Bird, people realize that you are far cooler than anybody else, even if you are just the bass player. Actually, you aren't just the bass player once you are a 'Bird player. 'Birds select their owners. You aren't a 'Bird person unless one chooses you. Sounds like you have been chosen. Therefore, you are clearly very cool. It doesn't matter what other people think, because it fact.

I had read somewhere(?)that Paul recorded the bass line on guitar first and came back and doubled it on bass-which you can do in one shot now with an octaver!

And that I actually do with an octaver. What's really fun is to bow the upright through an octaver with both clean signal and a reduced high octave and the low octave turned way down. Then send it through an envelope follower. What I lack in talent, I try to make up with gimmicks.

I'm a bit mixed. You mean I have to *wait* for the Gibby 'Birds to find me? I want them NOW! I can only assume that additional 'Birds make me exponentially cooler.

My credo: baffle 'em with b.s.

It took me approximately 3 years for the right 'Bird and I to "find" each other. We've been together 45 years now.:)
