Thunderbird Club

Thunderbird sighting - while out and about this week, I caught Tesla here in NJ. Brian Wheat used NR Thunderbirds for most of the show (unfortunately, all fitted with EMG pickups:vomit:). Not sure what is up with the cream/white bass - must be something custom given the bridge type and two-octave fingerboard.

the one on the left looks custom made..

Thanks man! I am going to call Hipshot tomorrow to see if I can get a set. If not I will let you know. Appreciate it!
No worries. I happened to have a set of inserts that fit in the holes in the plexi. And I had chrome flathead bolts that fit those inserts.

So, I had a rough day at practice. Here's the story:

Bought an Epi IV, didn't like the pups, and quickly replaced it with an Epi Pro (with Gibson HBs) and loved it. But like an idiot, I thought "man, I'd like to find one that's a bit lighter", and traded it for another Epi Pro w/ Gibbies. Went to practice today (this is my stoner metal band), and... instant mud. Tried dialing in EQ the entire practice, and could never quite get away from the general boominess of the sound. At first, I suspected either the room or the bass rig, but remembered that I was getting similar boominess yesterday at my post-rock rehearsal, right after the bass swap. So, I've got a few questions:

1) What are the typical means of getting past boominess? I have heard that modern SG basses (another bass that had too much boom) are equipped with the same pups, so I think I'm running into similar issues. I've changed to some brighter strings (DR Sunbeams), but it's too late tonight for me to fire up the bass. Pickup height? Anything else?
2) How do the Vintage Pros compare? I had figured that the Probuckers would have actually been a downgrade thinking that all things Gibson > Epi, but realized I might have made an error in judgment. Would I avoid some of these issues by jumping up to the VP?

Thanks for any advice. I loved my experience with the last bass enough that I know that there's a solution here, but obviously I'm wanting the most cost-effective.

Oh, and hooray! Red Sox win!

Start with EQ then strings. Dial back bass a tad and it may help a lot. A Thunderbird will rip your lungs out with bass if you crank up the bass, which turns into boom and mud in the wrong room. Different strings may change the boom a bit, but without knowing much more than boom, it is tough to say what strings might work better. One last thing is to angle the amp a little so you get the sound waves bouncing around a bit different.

I saw Mark play last night with The Nasty Habits. Halloween bash. They must have played for 3.5 hours!

It was awesome. The band was great, people were loving it. Huge turn out.

I had a chance to say hi for a few minutes, after they finally stopped playing! "Hey I know you from the Thunderbird thread on TB!!" ....etc

Thanks Mark!

Long trip home earlier today, I got my car unloaded put on some PJ's and fell asleep with the cat for a couple hours....
It was quite the evening, we played pretty well and did indeed pack the bar there's more pics and some videos at some point soon. After the show as I'm leaving the bar with a shot of Mac Allen 12 year I get a tap on the shoulder and Chris (Toptube, great costume BTW) introduces himself and of course mentions the club here, a pleasant surprise I was not expecting in the wilds of Pt Angeles...….
Thanks Chris!

Yeah, I quickly found that dialing the bass control on the amp helped things. Though it was only in a relative sense. I'm using an Orange Terror Bass, which is already pretty warm/dark, but I didn't have any problems with the previous TB Pro. I dunno. Could be the room, as it was the first time I had played with this specific set of gear in the room. I also tried dialing back the neck pickup a bit, though I could only do that so much before my overall perceived volume started to suffer.

I'm just wondering what possible difference there could be that I'm not considering.

View attachment 3193180 I know there's been a lot of car talk here recently, but hopefully this is still the Thunderbird Club for a reason. Finally took 'er out of the case, now that I have an amp worthy of her existence.

May I have a number please? Thanks... Phat.

Thank you for your patience Phat Stanley!

It wasn't going to be easy bringing the list forward and quoting you with my phone - still getting used to my new tablet as well.....Anywho, please do be welcome here, that's a great looking white "Classic" that you have there - Rock it in good health for a long time! You are #740 here, please feel free to ask questions and post pics and of course, good humor is welcomed.

Thank you for your patience Phat Stanley!

....Anywho, please do be welcome here, that's a great looking white "Classic" that you have there - Rock it in good health for a long time! You are #740 here, please feel free to ask questions and post pics and of course, good humor is welcomed.

Thank you my Queen. Very glad to finally be part of the gang.

Watched some of your videos.... you gals kick much ass! Don't know if you ever make it as far south as the likes of Corvallis Oregon, but if so... I'd be all over that show! Keep it up!

Sorry to hear your frustration. I have Gibby SG and EB and Tbirds as well as Eppi birds including a VP. I haven't ever experienced boomyness that couldn't be dialed out.

Some things to try...

With your rig
Not sure what amp/cab configuration you have but if you haven't already done so, try setting your rig tone flat or slightly bumped up in the mids. Also try placing your cab up off the stage floor on a milk crate or something to keep it from coupling with the stage. And if your cab is located in a corner or up near a wall try relocating it elsewhere.

With your bass
Drop the pickups down a bit from the strings. Try brighter strings (Chromes, Sunbeams, Cobalts...). If you can, use a pic and play down around the bridge pup (this will open up a whole new world of wonderful sounds on a bird, very aggressive relatively bright with grit growl and grind). Max the tone control on your bass all the way up and then use your individual pickup volumes, your right hand placement and your rig settings to get the desired tone you want.

Other bass options
Keep in mind tone preferences are subjective so there is no single best sounding TBird that we would all agree on. However, I find the Eppi VP to be significantly brighter and more aggressive sounding than my Gibson TBird, Eppi Goth, or my SG Supreme basses or EB5 bass, all without sacrificing much on the bottom end. Boomy is the last thing I'd ever worry about with an Epiphone VP. In fact I had to go through a number of string changes to find a set that would allow the VP to lay back in the mix vs jumping out front, Cobalt Flats and some Fender nickel rounds have worked nicely so far.

I posted this VP Bird sighting a couple of pages ago, best price I've seen on a used one yet...

The case alone is worth $150 if you can even find one. If you have the cash, I'd recommend snagging it to see if it solves your problem, you could probably flip it for profit if you didn't like it. Personally, I think the VP at $700 is the best bang for the buck buy for any new bass currently on the market today (including Squier, Fender, Ibby, SX...). In terms of features, build quality, sound, playability and looks it easily competes with basses at twice the price.

Another thing to consider, you can buy pickups that are similar (or the same) to the Epi VP from eBay or Reverb. Others here can share their feelings on the pickups. I have never tried these (unless they are in my VP) but there are many positive reports from Tbird owners.

Easiest fix to try is dropping the height of your P/Ups.

If you can remember your EQ settings of when you were happy with the way it sounded, start there and try a full turn of the P/Up screws to drop their height. Keep dropping them a full turn at a time until the "boominess" is gone.

I had a similar thing happen to me when I did complete set ups on my 2013 Gibsons. Some suggest that you raise your P/Ups as high as you can stand but that has not worked for me at all. They were so boomy that I thought I had "destroyed my tone forever", dramatic, I know... but it was a simple fix when I cranked them back down. I also hated the sound of my strings slapping the P'Ups when I dug in.

That said, I did try some of the above fixes. I know there was some equal boominess to the guitarist's amp, so I know at least part of it is the room, but I was still unable to dial it out. I've changed the strings as of last night, will lower the pickups, and we will play in our normal rehearsal room at our next practice. Next, I will lower the pups, just to see if that makes a difference (it did for my G&L L2K when I had a similar problem).

Also, just ordered the mentioned Epi VP 'Bird. Like you said, I can probably flip it if it doesn't work out, but at least I know I have options.

It's early Monday morning, so I'm not drunk, but still want to say that I love the posters in this thread. You guys are crazy helpful!

What's the consensus for down tuning a thunderbird? How do they handle a low c and beyond? Do they have enough clarity or do they get muddy?

I really only have experience playing them in standard tuning.
I have a Gibson tuned to D standard with a drop tuner for Drop C. It is clear as a bell.
Strings make a big difference though.

It was really fun. Something about costumes helps everyone be cool. I didn't try to take any pics there. But here are some front porch shots of my costume.

And yeah, never thought I would run into a TB regular, in Port Angeles!

Does anyone have the bolts for a Hipshot Supertone 3-point bridge replacement to fit a Gibson? The one I bought from someone online only has the Epi bolts. When I have bought the Supertone new they came with bolts that fit Gibson and Epi. Any of you Epi owners with a black Hipshot three point replacement have the Gibson bolt left over? I would be happy to take them off your hands.

PM me.
