I am still thinking about a string experiment. I have been using nickel strings for some time. So, anyone got suggestions for stainless steel strings I should try (and why)? Anything other than rounds I should consider (and why)?
I'm gonna hold off on suggestions 'til I see what else comes up. No point in repeating-or being redundant.

Well, now that there have been a few suggestions, I'll put in my $.02(US). I don't like the 'feel' of rounds, so anything I recommend will be a 'flat'. IDK what sort of sound you're after, but for round sound/flat feel it's EB Cobalt flats. I'd been using mostly D'Addario Chromes on everything but my LPB25 which has their 1/2 rounds. A little brighter than the Chromes. I had their Tapewounds on my semi-hollow Ibanez for a very upright-y tone, but my last set went 'dead' kinda quickly so Chromes-for now. Prolly going back to tapes[glutton for punishment]. The EpiBird 5er came with(ugh!)rounds, so I bought a set of 7ender 9050s(no longer available in a 5 string set). I didn't like the sound(s) I was getting and considered putting the bass up for sale. @JJR58 turned me on to the EB Cobalt flats. They gave me the sound I was looking for(or for which I was looking:smug:), so I'm keeping the 'Bird even though it weighs 11 pounds(!). One of my favorite sets of strings was EB "Red Tubies". Naturally, no longer made.:banghead:

I feel your pain. I loved Nashville Straights for guitar (they lasted and sounded/felt great), but they only hung around a few years. I think I got the last dozen sets in Atlanta.

If I'd had any sense, I'd have bought more of them when I could. I saw a set on ebay about a year ago. Shoulda bought 'em<sigh>.

Just sucks that Fender bought them out back when (in 03 or 08 when SWR line was cut short). I've been listening to Ampeg 410 demos online & i'm actually surprised i don't like them more in real life. Maybe just a lack of really pushing one through its pace to my own music. Of all the bands i listen to, at least the older stuff, for sure ampeg was in the forefront of recording.

EDIT: I'm keeping my eyes open for another Goliath II or Eden of the same range. There's a Goliath III in my area for 400$, i'm debating.

In the mid 90's I saw a bass player at a local show using an SWR rig and was really impressed by his sound. It was enough for me to buy one of my own. I also have an Eden 2x10 cab and use it with my 90's Mesa M2000 head - it is my main rig these days. Plenty of headroom (I rarely turn it past 9:00) and it's the sound I want to hear.

Oh it's so time for a random vid. Totally sparked by @D.M.N.

Much (album) rotations of this one back in my early art school days - this and "Lela" (Eric Clapton/Bonnie & Delaney) and Traffic's "Low Spark of the High Healed Boys"... After the Gold Rush also... (long live Neil Young)

The lesson I take from all this is that once Gone likes a string, it gets discontinued.:D
