Thunderbird Club

Ken Scott is an active member of the GearSlvtz forum if you want to stalk him.

I’ve seen him respond to folks there. How awesome is that?!

Who has the most Hellishly Obnoxious rig?

I understand what they’re saying but I’m not totally convinced or persuaded... 10s and 12s are capable of producing lower frequencies.... so there are exceptions.... as a general rule as per the STOCK offerings of ampeg...the 18 goes the lowest. I think the general rule is noteworthy and the exception simply interesting.

Wow, that thread was 20 minutes I’ll never get back...mostly just a bunch of babble about nothing. If you hang around any forum long enough you’ll see some of the same people taking the same lap around the same course. Many aren’t on the internet to learn because the most important thing on the internet is that I’m right and more importantly, YOU’RE WRONG!!! It’s a sad byproduct of all the awesome advantages of the internet.

I will say there were some very good natured dudes being silly and you misinterpreted them. They’ve just seen some of the same dopey arguments too many times and are choosing to have fun instead of fighting.

Also @Passinwind very probably knows more about speaker and circuit design than anyone in that thread. Listen to what he has to say. Good dude too.

Bottom line is different speakers have different design goals, so there’s no real way to say “18’s sound like this and 10’s sound like that...” of course you can make general assumptions that may or may not work out for you, but using that reasoning, you’re just guessing.

I'd give that 10 out of 13 on my proprietary awesomeness scale.

Only took you 20 minutes? I don’t read at 60 seconds per page.

Took much from Passinwind.

I agree absolutely about internet downfalls

However in regards to people “having fun” instead of fighting....it is what’s causing “fighting”

If they don’t want to argue then they just shouldn’t. Nor make excuses for it.

I was a TOTAL HATER on JIOs distressed finishes thread.... I’m still not a fan of relics or beat up guitars as a point of pride.... when I ding my gear it HURTS........BUT my opinion and haters humour has NOPLACE in his thread.

Found out he’s a really cool member with much to offer....as are those guys I was arguing with even the a$$3$.

Contribute, either by agreeing or disagreeing while stating effectively why.... I can appreciate jokes but not using humour as a guise to be an a$$hole.

The Hlf cab is interesting.... especially, compared to the same hlf but 610.... when noticing the low frequency loss over what seems to be the bigger cab? And how the 810 cab DROPS THE HIGHEND SIGNIFICANTLY. My impression was some mix between bigger cab and sealed cab.
Any thoughts?

410HLF is a nice compromise. I think two would be better than one 810.

I learned alot in that thread...

Like I said though excluding the exceptions as a blanket argument.... mind the relevant rule.

In stock offerings from Ampeg.... 1 x 18 is lower than my 810.

I don’t care how low a 12 inch speaker CAN GO.... it’s an obscure argument that derailed me from buying the 18. Lol.

I do appreciate the knowledge shared though.

Never tried to say that 18s sound like this and 10s sound like that....it’s not an abstract painting, poetry, nor a philosophical school of thought....

The objectve low FREQUENCY range from an 18 inch cab, compared to any of the other 10 inch cab offerings from ampeg, is lower. Not subjective “sound”

I'd give that 10 out of 13 on my proprietary awesomeness scale.

That’s what I thought.

No, you also need a metric crescent wrench.

I do appreciate the knowledge shared though.

Well, not really, but sure :)

I’ve built somewhere between 250-300 high end bass cabs. I’m also an authorized builder for one of the most respected designers out there. Doesn’t mean I’d win an argument against Duke Lejeune...he’d clean my clock. But I’ve kinda been working at this for years and hopefully learned a bit on the subject. Those Ampeg ‘specs’ are almost entirely meaningless. No T/S numbers, no porting details. That doesn’t make em bad cabs, they’re just not really specs.
If you’d rather soapbox than have a conversation, have at it :)

After a few months of using flats (Fender 9050s) I finally tore them off the Greco today and restrung it with Swing 66s, and once again everything is right in the world. The band I've been playing with says they really like the sound of the flatwounds, but I just cannot bring myself to get along with them. The sound fine playing certain things, mostly when trying to emulate someone else or an old recording, but they just aren't for me. I end up getting hand cramps from playing too hard trying to eek some high end clarity that isn't just a click put of them. The Rotos though, they're just perfectly clear and aggressive and bright. Hey guys. I’m going to ring my own bell here, I hope you don’t mind. The local CBS television station did a little segment on my band. Motley Crue and Gibson Blackbird content included, so it’s Thunderbird related.

Sweet! Nice profile piece for your band and for an upcoming gig.

This guy is still trying to re-home his Studio V. It's probably been well over a year and the third time he's put it up on CL. I offered him $700 to see how desperate he was to sell it the last time he put it up... he declined. He might take $1,000, pure speculation, shipped if someone wants it and that wouldn't be too bad of a deal.

PM me, I worked with the guys in engineering at Universal Audio when working (we all did) as a hardware designer at E-MU/Creative and you probably didn't know that they are in Scotts Valley......the old Sequential Circuits (Prophet 5) gang....
I did not know that. Dang all the time I lived and grew up there and they were right over the hill!

I don’t appreciate the knowledge shared? You’re able to tell me that how?

Well with all you know, what do you actually have to say on the subject?

I didn’t really notice you say anything... except...

Bottom line is different speakers have different design goals, so there’s no real way to say “18’s sound like this and 10’s sound like that...” of course you can make general assumptions that may or may not work out for you, but using that reasoning, you’re just guessing.

Well in light of that I am terribly humbled...

Objective frequency specifications as per analyzed results mean nothing? HOW!!!?

You’re right science means nothing, I talk too much, I should just generalize and tell people they can say more just as long as it means less. Wouldn’t want to actually communicate anything.

I’d rather have a conversation about the Subject.

PLEASE ELEBORATE WHEN YOU HAVE A BREAK FROM BUILDING SO MANY HIGH END CABS.

Perhaps elsewhere if everyone prefers... I think it’s terribly interesting but... I’m not sure why you don’t lead with YOUR information instead of just telling people “You’re Wrong” which you earlier denounced the entire internet for. Going as far as saying ampeg is wrong in the sense that their Frequency Range specs mean nothing!

I know I don’t have to post the definition of specification. Just because they didn’t post all of the specifications it doesn’t mean that they ARE NOT specifications nor meaningless. You must understand this with all your experience although I think any reasonably educated child would. Definition.

FREQUENCY RANGE. Is all I’m referring to.

Despite all the evidence to the contrary I don’t really enjoy arguing... I just wish people would lead with their Information instead of their Commentary while leaving all of the useful information out...
