I was just musing on this on my way home from band practice (I did not take any solos) and an errand. Yep, melodies, rhythm figures and fun with phrasing. Playing solos teaches you how to play them. One thing that often happens over time is they get shorter...

We're often required to do "dinner music"-standards, bossa novas,etc.-in our first set. Each of us will normally take a chorus, since we're basically background music. I usually just fool around the chord structure up an octave and have done with it. My only other"solos"during the night are the intros to "My Girl" and "We Gotta Get Outta This Place". More than enuff. If interested, go on YT and play "Twisted, Cover by Treasure Coast Driftwoods"

Did you do your errands solo?

I wonder if the shortening of solos is a result of maturity as a musician or maturity as a person. I have been playing only about 3 years now, so I don't think it is maturity as a musician. For me, I think it is maturity as a person. Then again, I also know that I am not representative of the population at large.

Really? I don’t think anything I do can be described as ‘analysis.’ I just like to goof around with stuff and give general impressions of what I thought.

Kat made some good observations about ‘endorsements’ of gear. The fact that someone or even a bunch of people love a certain piece of gear, doesn’t necessarily make it right for me or wrong for them. I personally love when friends share clips of strings, pedals or whatever. Sometimes it can help me stumble onto something cool I didn’t know about. If not, no harm done

It’s just great to hear your friends having fun with their playing and gear. There are so many in this thread I’ve become extremely fond of. Why wouldn’t I want to hear them share their joy? Whether that would affect my decisions for a gear purchase is beside the point

Totally. There's so much variety in gear for a reason. Everyone hears things differently and has different needs and tastes. I just wish it were easier to try out different gear without buying first.

I try to support brick and mortar shops as much as possible. Getting advise and being able to try stuff far outweighs saving a small amount of money. I’d rather spend $600 on an amp I know I like than to roll the dice on a $500 amp, for example

That is a curious thought. Started playing 6 years ago. I was so excited I’m sure I over played every baseline I learned. It was exciting to be playing the instrument at last! I was also focused on myself and therefore not in the mindset that a bass player has a role in the band and that role is at times very specific... and selfless.

I was being a wiseass. It has never happened before. But really, your descriptions are great. Take a bow, fer chrissakes!

But, the comments are about gear, strings, and everything else are great. What I like isn't what anybody else likes, and what sounds good in one context isn't what sounds good in another. The one exception that I can think of is a Miku pedal. I have heard the one my brother had. It was amusing for about a minute and a half. Then it was just creepy and irritating. It's not good in any context. I can't think of anything else that doesn't work somewhere, somehow, even if I never have a use for it. And then there are things like a Morely Rotating Wah that makes no sense, and that has very few uses, but is great anyway.

In the restaurant industry, they use what’s called an Ansul system for fire suppression. If it goes off, by state law they have to discard all food items. Everything. So one day our linen guy shows up looking like his dog just died. What’s wrong delivery guy? Yep, he accidentally triggered the system at one of his stops. His company had to write a sizable check.

I'll admit to overplaying more than is really appropriate. There's a level of hyper that leaks out, but it's usually under control. I suppose there's a reason for playing drums and rockabilly slap as well as bass guitar.
