The Pinkbird is still getting painted, I assume. But that doesn't stop me from thinking about what strings to put on it when it gets home. I assume it will be home in about a month. I don't really know yet. I have had a couple emails asking about this or that and what I wanted - paint mostly. I don't need or want a bass that looks brand new, because it isn't, and it wouldn't look that way very long anyway. But, strings. It had tapes on it, and they sounded great with Chinabuckers. I could put them back on and be very happy. They have the lime green/electric blue edges like a round when you dig in a bit, but then they recede back into a darker blue-green sound or even a P-bass maroon sound if you let them. Cobalt Flats are somewhat similar, except they have the electric blue around black quality more.

Before my conversion to Bass Burners, there was something bothering me about the feel of the Rotos, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Post Bass Burner I worked out it was the 80 A string, which you wouldn't think was discernably thinner than an 85.

I used to put those Bass Burners on a Peavey Dynabass 5 I had for a while. That was like 30 years ago. Maybe I'll revisit them. I remember liking them.

Just a lot of grey and rain here in RI today. Raw, with a lot of residual ice and snow holding pools of water. Not windy really.

Wankery is so 80s. Don't care for it. Although I like my politics separate from my music, I do like U2. And it is primarily because they all play right in the pocket. Even the Edge with all his delays and effects, he keeps everything right in the pocket - a talent demonstrated by too few guitar players. And I like Slash's solos - he gets more done with one note (ok, with a wah) than EVH does with 64.

I really liked Eddie the first 2-3 albums; I really heard him as a virtuoso. But eventually there wasn't anything fresh or new to my ears. I think that's all too easy to fall into, especially if you get put on a major pedestal when you're still fairly young.

I was talking to Ken about this just today. That’s what put me off of Rotos many years ago. I was breaking A strings a lot and never felt the weight of the string quite matched the E. As always, I’m probably full of it, but that’s what I thought in my 20’s at least. For years my preference was 50-70-90-110, but these days I’m usually doing something in the 45-65-85-105 range. Works fine for me with most strings.

The TI flats are a different animal where the gauge vs actual tension is very different. The 106 E string feels very low tension. Just fired the Hofner up through my M9/212 and think it sounds fantastic. The strings are a bit too bright right now, but just a little and I hear they tame nicely and last a long time, which they’d better at those prices!

Update on my daughter’s (not really a punk)band:
They decided to call it “The Chili Joint”...

My daughter is now on vocals only and her friend (former band mate) is going to play bass. That girl brings great energy, but lives about 4 hours away, so yours truly gets to fill in at rehearsals when she’s not there.

I introduced them to this tune and they’re going to play it:

Well, that's cool, but you really need to introduce them to something off "On Your Feet or On Your Knees". The *real* Blue Oyster Cult.

Which tapes are you using? I love the sound of the Fender black tapes I’ve tried, but usually take em off because I have to play with such a light touch or they go wonky. Not a wide enough dynamic range on those for what I like. Curious if there are noticeably different tapes out there I should try

We have seen the enemy and he is us. In our collective lust to save a couple of bucks, we starved the local merchants that we could develop a relationship with; who would carry gear for us to try. Now they are gone and they are not likely coming back.

I try to support brick and mortar shops as much as possible. Getting advise and being able to try stuff far outweighs saving a small amount of money. I’d rather spend $600 on an amp I know I like than to roll the dice on a $500 amp, for example

I buy a few "disposables" online, like strings. But all my basses (save one which was bought used in person) have been purchased at my local retailer (a chain but still local). It has allowed me to try before buying, gives me a warranty (even used), and has resulted in goodwill between us. I guess they have made decent money on me; when I was asking about amps and doing comparisons, the assistant manager suggested I take a couple home to try out and bring back in a week or so. Let's see Sweetwater do that without charging your credit card...

I guess he didn't get the memo that those things suck out all your tone. So did the drum solos come before or after the bass solo? Or were they weaved within all the bass solos? Sure you aren't remembering correctly and you weren't actually at Guitar Center?


Let's bring Angus Young into this. I think he's pretty perfect in these respects.

As for bass stuff, Paul Turner keeps himself really busy here, but I find it pure pleasure to watch/listen.

Love the composition here. Lots of notes, but they all serve the song.

I always like these descriptions. Never sure what they mean, but they are a joy to read.

Yeah, I have a 200w 15 combo that is not allowed to be used in the house anymore. Rattles everything. I’ve figure fair game when she’s out though. Didn’t think about potential damage to her collection in the living room though. If I broke one.....

Music room is safe, but the stereo in the living room? We have old style floor stereo speakers. haron keeps pictures and candles atop them. If I crank it, I have to move them somewhere safe; they tend to cliff dive otherwise.
