I really liked Eddie the first 2-3 albums; I really heard him as a virtuoso. But eventually there wasn't anything fresh or new to my ears. I think that's all too easy to fall into, especially if you get put on a major pedestal when you're still fairly young.

I was talking to Ken about this just today. That’s what put me off of Rotos many years ago. I was breaking A strings a lot and never felt the weight of the string quite matched the E. As always, I’m probably full of it, but that’s what I thought in my 20’s at least. For years my preference was 50-70-90-110, but these days I’m usually doing something in the 45-65-85-105 range. Works fine for me with most strings.

The TI flats are a different animal where the gauge vs actual tension is very different. The 106 E string feels very low tension. Just fired the Hofner up through my M9/212 and think it sounds fantastic. The strings are a bit too bright right now, but just a little and I hear they tame nicely and last a long time, which they’d better at those prices!

We have seen the enemy and he is us. In our collective lust to save a couple of bucks, we starved the local merchants that we could develop a relationship with; who would carry gear for us to try. Now they are gone and they are not likely coming back.

I buy a few "disposables" online, like strings. But all my basses (save one which was bought used in person) have been purchased at my local retailer (a chain but still local). It has allowed me to try before buying, gives me a warranty (even used), and has resulted in goodwill between us. I guess they have made decent money on me; when I was asking about amps and doing comparisons, the assistant manager suggested I take a couple home to try out and bring back in a week or so. Let's see Sweetwater do that without charging your credit card...

I actually prefer to buy pre-loved wherever possible. Two basses, my amp, 3 of 5 current pedals (and 4 of 6 I have flipped). My cab, tuner, flanger and cases came from local retailers. My NR41 Bird came from a strange man in a swamp.

Which tapes are you using? I love the sound of the Fender black tapes I’ve tried, but usually take em off because I have to play with such a light touch or they go wonky. Not a wide enough dynamic range on those for what I like. Curious if there are noticeably different tapes out there I should try

I kinda like the D'Addario's on my Ibby AGB 200.

I try to support brick and mortar shops as much as possible. Getting advise and being able to try stuff far outweighs saving a small amount of money. I’d rather spend $600 on an amp I know I like than to roll the dice on a $500 amp, for example

I mainly buy online when I can't find what I want locally.

In the restaurant industry, they use what’s called an Ansul system for fire suppression. If it goes off, by state law they have to discard all food items. Everything. So one day our linen guy shows up looking like his dog just died. What’s wrong delivery guy? Yep, he accidentally triggered the system at one of his stops. His company had to write a sizable check.

I don't recall what sort of system we had over the fry pit at Burger King in 1975, but I was cleaning the vents and knocked some white stuff into the fresh grease I had put into the fryers an hour ago. "Hey, Wonderwoman[1], what's this white stuff?"

I had to change the grease again. After I got the contaminated grease out, I had to purge and clean the system, then add the new grease- which took about an hour to get to operating temp. We opened at 10, and the fryers were back online about 11:30- into the lunch rush and many unhappy customers later.
Today they'd probably have to involve a hazmat unit as well.

[1] That was the manager's nickname; BK would bring her into a store teetering on dying, and within 6-8 months she'd have it doing great. I started a week after her, and she took that store from the bottom 25% in GA to something like #5 in the state. With a crew of 3rd and 4th gen welfare recipients (all women but one) working their ways out of the projects and a hippie (yours truly). She was their starmanager. She left our store to go back to school to become a forest ranger. I'm sure she became a kickass ranger, too.

That's hard to say. I use that bass in big band and concert band situations playing string bass parts. I don't really"dig in"much-I let the amp do the work for me. I never played UB, being an ex-saxist. Not a lotta help.<addendum>I wanted to try LaBella "Deep Talkin'" tapes but even tho the Ibby is short scale, it takes medium length strings(SS strings' silks overhang the nut on E and G[?])and I couldn't find them locally or online Maybe next change.

Music room is safe, but the stereo in the living room? We have old style floor stereo speakers. haron keeps pictures and candles atop them. If I crank it, I have to move them somewhere safe; they tend to cliff dive otherwise.

Well, floor speakers for the stereo left when we got married. I run early Bose Acoustimass at “sane” volume levels except when nobody else is home. They still sound great 35 years later.
