We have seen the enemy and he is us. In our collective lust to save a couple of bucks, we starved the local merchants that we could develop a relationship with; who would carry gear for us to try. Now they are gone and they are not likely coming back.
I buy a few "disposables" online, like strings. But all my basses (save one which was bought used in person) have been purchased at my local retailer (a chain but still local). It has allowed me to try before buying, gives me a warranty (even used), and has resulted in goodwill between us. I guess they have made decent money on me; when I was asking about amps and doing comparisons, the assistant manager suggested I take a couple home to try out and bring back in a week or so. Let's see
