Thunderbird Club

In that vain, I am not missing the DarkGlass in the least. After not using it, and now using the Ashly, I’m more then pleased with the results.

Makes perfect sense to me! Again, not dissing pedals because I love em. I do think as a rule, bass players aren’t typically allotted enough space by the other musicians to get the effect they’re hoping to achieve from different pedals in the first place

I normally(?)only use the Micro POG when we go out as a trio. I use 'octave up' to give a bass/guitar unison effect during solos-mine or the guitarist's. Partially makes up for the missing other guitarist. I had an OC-2 which only gave me octave down so I'd play the bass line an octave up as an ersatz guitar and let the octaver produce the bass line.

I get that...would love to hear it sometime!

went to UA yesterday afternoon to grab a few suds with my buds and walking around the office lobby saw this...talk about a blast from the past...

Some of those old Emu pieces still sound great and are coming back into vogue with the cool kids. Lots of that stuff was considered state of the art tech in its day...today, it could basically be replaced with a single iPad or laptop with as good or ‘better’ results. Not as fun though :)

Currently outta town. When I get back, IF I can figure out how to upload a short demo, I'll give it a shot. Technologically, I'm partying like it's still 1999.

totally with you, and don't forget better audio quality. Creative bought E-mu back in the early nineties for the EMU8000 chipset knowing it was a matter of time before everything got integrated into a motherboard. E-mu had been around for 25 years and was a 25 million dollar/yr company (heck, there was times we would get our paychecks and told to go to the bank right away and cash them, others when you would walk into the cafeteria and see a jar on a table with a Post-it that said "We could use your contribution to buy components for next month's build" ...no joke..) when Mr Sim, founder of Creative bought us. In 7 years, Creative went from being a garage company in Singapore to an over billion dollar/yr company with that chipset.....

Wow, that’s crazy!
You may know, I still dabble in electronic music and hardware has seen a huge resurgence in the past 5 years, which I totally get. I do lots of live, real time sampling and mangling on hardware. Main two pieces are from a company in Sweden called Elektron. Cool stuff. That said, I recently dug an old mid 90’s Korg Trinity Plus out of the closet just for kicks. It’s still more powerful and sounds better than most of the newer hardware. You just gotta erase all those dated presets and make your own. The only improvents in modern hardware I see is a more straightforward interface with less menu diving. But the sound of 90’s era EMU, Yamaha and Korg haven’t really been improved upon, IMO

I'm musical director. I get as much space as I want! Seriously, it helps if the pitched instruments work cooperatively rather than competitively, as with everything else in life.

I just checked the price on Coles 4038 mics. Blimey!

Sure, too many pedals can kill tone. Not saying bass players can’t or shouldn’t use pedals. Just saying I rarely hear em actually do anything positive for their sound
I get very excited in those rare times I get to use them. On more than one occasion in going from practicing at home with headphones to live band setting I forget to adjust my pedal gains. It seems that when I forget to do this I get this issue. Not saying this is what you’re seeing...

Crazy, right?! Still one of the coolest mics ever made for what I like. But it makes the price of an AEA R84 seem downright reasonable. If this trend continues where I find myself engineering more, I intend to add a a second R84. Best microphone purchase I’ve ever made and I’ve made quite a few that cost as much as 3x more. Really, if I can ever justify an R88 I’ll be all over it. Stereo is nice sometimes :)

trade in the Subaru and Lyft to work?:D

Selling both, the '99 and the '06 wouldn't get me there!

I am being an environmentally friendly commuter now, I ride our Light Rail to downtown, the station is two miles from my house, my roomie drives me 3 days out 5 - I barely drive anymore, going to change my car insurance to by-the -mile. But yes, I wonder at the wisdom of owning two cars at this point in my life.

Don't think you need to do much in the way of mental gymnastics to justify a second R84.

A brief rush of blood had me considering a pair of SDCs (basically for drum recording) plus a ribbon (Røde NTR) but my good senses have returned. LDCs are more versatile in limited circumstances ... and you don't have to bolt the capsules down before moving them.

Someone is always selling an NT2A on Gumtree, it's just a matter of waiting until they come along at the right price.

SDC’s are for people who mic hihats and like bright, glassy sounding acoustic guitars and cymbals. Rarely something I actually want. SM81’s are cool though. Also like AKG 451’s, but they’d be way down on my priority list. Really, any condenser, but that’s my own weird quirk. One that I love that isn’t terribly expensive is the AT4050. Kinda reminds me of a U67. Seriously underrated microphone, I think

Welcome here!

I happy to add you to the club, we can be a bit silly and of course go off on some unrelated stuff, but there's a lot of stored knowledge here and we encourage questions.

We like the search function here. We don't use it, but we like it... Be like us, appreciate the search function, but don't use it.

Kinda quiet on the front here this morning. I have an excuse.

Who's a good boy?
Who's a good boy!?

Welcome! Agreed that strap goes with the bass.
Feel free to ask questions here and skip over posts when the conversations veer into completely unrelated topics. Eventually we get back to Thunderbirds:)

Everything is about Thunderbirds! Every scrap of nonsense here is inspired by Thunderbirds.

Any recommendations for waterslide Thunderbird logos for the pickguard? I mentioned this to the luthier and he said to get one of those and he can apply it and apply a layer of nitro to seal it on. All I've been able to find is this, which may be fine:

Don’t hold me to this. Larry or Scott possibly.
