Thunderbird Club

Got my mobile rig all wired up and tested. The mic preamp casing ain’t pretty to look at, but it sounds nice!

I talked to the guy who built the pre amps. They’re in fact a 1:1 replica of API 512A mic amps. Not super common as a stand-alone pre, but that’s the pre that came in every API console from 1968-1974 or thereabouts, before the original owner was bought out. When he left, all the techs and designers went with him.
I deeply regret getting a 13” MacBook Pro...such a tiny screen is frustrating!
Can’t wait to use this on Sunday!
are their available line level inputs?

So there's a Goth nearby for $150 (w/practice amp, but I never use one), and a Cassic Pro for $375 a little ways north...

I could do it...

Don't know whether to do the cheap Goth(no neck dots, yes), the nicer, neck-thru, more trad Classic Pro, or just hold out.

I like my Goth, especially when I remember I paid $200 for it.
But I’d be awfully tempted by a nice Classic Pro for $350 ish and I don’t even need one. I’d prob look for Chinabuckers or something to make it different to the Gibson.

But I really think I’d like a NR style to fit between my current pair.
(Or just mod the Goth seeing I already have it.)

I say go for one of them. We enable you know.

(I’ll just keep lurking for a NR style at a good price & hopefully at the right time.)

here tonight...another cool Americana hang....Henflings Firehouse Tavern...right next to the fire (behind) dept. Around since the 20's.....firemen used to drink here when no fires to put out..:D.....pretty happening spot..

That's some mighty fine bass playin there.

Personally I'd hold out for a VP, but it's hard to beat the Goth as a mod platform. GC has used ones at low prices all the time.

I almost went for this one.
Epiphone Non-Reverse Thunderbird V 1995 Surf Green
Unique on several fronts - NR shape, interesting Color, Five strings. I only held off because I want an NR that I can easily get to near VP spec and this one would have required too much work routing for five string Humbucker pups not to mention the cost of the pups (which I guess would have to be Lull or Lollar for a five string). But if you plan on keeping it stock it might be a neat addition to the family with a different look and sound.

When I got mine(I'd wanted one for years), I knew it had the P/J pups and I kinda figured on[maybe]putting ThunderBuckers or(?)pups in it. OK, having it done-outta my capabilities. Then I put the the EB Cobalt Flats* on it. Saved a 'shipload' of cash and got the sound(s) I wanted. Might be worth dickering and see what you can get on the price. BTW, I only use the P pup.

* Thanks again, Jeff

Fortunately I already have the P bass sounds I need in both four and five string active and passive models as well as short, full and extended scale variants. Same goes for jazz basses.

These days I'm mostly a Humbucker guy and definitely focused on the Gibson range of sounds along with the looks, feel and ergonomics of the thunderbird.

It's just not a good match for me, but still a neat looking bass at a nice price that might make someone here a very happy camper. And I'm certain that Cobalt Flats would sound awesome on a five string!

Not trying to sway or 'enable' you.[maybe a little] With the 7ender flats I put on it, it was muddy and undefined. I was about to try and sell it but @JJR58 suggested the Cobalts. I put them on and now I hafta dial back the tone or it's too 'klanky'-for what our group does(60s-70s rock).Prolly gonna use it tomorrow night-larger room, can let it out some.
