Thank you; very enlightening. I guess this is why I don't worry to much about nut width and instead focus on how the neck feels to play. And especially appreciative of doing the measurements the hard way - unmetrical.

The more basses I have and have bonded with, the less the neck width is an issue. I used to only want narrow necks. The ‘15 neck is my favorite. I have an Ibby with a nice narrow neck. I switch to my P and after a few seconds, don’t really notice or think about any difference. I guess once I’ve become used to a particular bass, my muscle memory auto corrects...

So just a very sincere quick question from someone who aspires to reach mediocrity some day - I play finger style exclusively on both 4 and 5 string basses, if I wanted to play an 8 or 10 string bass (set up for octaves) would I have to switch to pick playing? Pardon me if it sounds like a stupid question, I've been 8 string curious for a while but have never tried one or seen anyone play one without a pick.

I usually play multis with a pick, 4 strings fingers and pick, and 5 /6's fingerstyle only. But a lot of people play multis fingerstyle and if there's no pick around I'll use my fingers. I just prefer the pick attack for 8/10/12, I play a lot of chords and arpeggios on 12ers.

It took about six weeks of playing an 8 string to figure out my approach, but when I did it became an instant party.
