Thunderbird Club

Thunderbird Thursday (just barely here in CDT, but still.)

I finally bought a Hipshot and installed it, along with EB Cobalt Flats.

The good news is that two of the four screw holes from the original bridge lined up perfectly with the screwholes under the G and A strings, so I only had to drill the hole for the screw under the B string. No dowel and redrill. Huzzah!
The bad news is, as you can see, the bridge position is off. That was true of the original as well; I just forgot because it's been off so long. This was not Epiphone's finest hour.
Also, the wrap on the E string comes up onto the middle of the saddle. The saddles are intonated by ear at this point; I need to get this and my pedalboard with tuner in the same room to finish that. It still needs the truss rod adjusted but I don't have the right wrench yet.
I played it a little this evening; I haven't decided what I think of the active pickups yet. But I need to play it through something other than the Kalamazoo. It barely handles the E string and has no idea what to do with that B. On the other hand, even getting used to that monster of a neck (compared to my IV), it plays easily. These strings are all I hoped for.
Almost. There are several brown spots on the strings. What's up with that?

yes, humans can be amazing....what sends me is that these tubes could have been potentially being shot at by the enemy (Soviet fighter or AA guns) in the 50's and now they're going onstage to some rock show with a band.....W O W.....
Not diminishing your amazement. Just celebrating human imagination and engineering.
 
That's so cool! 12DW7 arriving tomorrow to replace the 12AU7 in here. The 12AU7 is way too clean.

At 9v (I assume it is 9v), the tubes in these pedals are generally plate starved, which lends a different character to a 12A?7 running at full voltage (something north of 200V with plate dissipation around 2W). But, I think that there are pedals out there that do run at high voltage. Some like the sound of the plate starved tube and that is good too - in fact that is what sag is in a tube amp.
 
I have no plan on using those strings at all, it was just a statement. But I did have to do that on my black T-Bird which wears 55-115

I will take the blame on that. With goneplaid's statement about tuning, my mind leapt to those subsonic strings.

I think if you were to install them, you definitely would have to file your nut (ahem) with a 175 F#.

Is that bird tuned DGCF? I have had thoughts about adding a bass with that tuning. Sort of a middle point between all the EADG basses and the BEAD bass.

Yes it is. Actually it has a Drop Tuner as well (installed prior to going DGCF), so it goes to drop C, hence the 115.
My Warlock is also DGCF with 50-110 DR Red Devils, a little too floppy... not a fan of round core strings.

Many years ago (in high school) I did electronics. Back in the 80s when tubes were still around in TVs and digital was available but very expensive. I quite enjoyed that sort of work and built a few guitar pedals. I had serious thoughts about going to University for Electrical Engineering (was accepted even) but ultimately chose to go a different direction. So, I come by my tube knowledge honestly. Back in high school I had the thought that what gets done with a tube in an amp, I could replicate with MOSFETs and JFETs. It seems like Tech 21 has done that though.

Lately, I have been turning thoughts to octaves and idly thinking that I could make an analog octave up fuzz and/or an analog octave up/down. I don't know that I could do digital.

Ah, very cool. It remains to be seen whether real tubes can do anything for me above what some of the solid state stuff I've tried does.
