Thunderbird Club

Worst headliner I’ve seen was Van Halen a few years ago. Poor attendance and they acted as if we were all beneath them, didn’t deserve them.

Two shows were happening around the same time both getting poor sales. So they combined them. Ended up VH joint headlining with Aerosmith. I had tickets for Aerosmith so ended up going to this. Aerosmith went in second last.

Other supports were The Living End, Kings of Chaos, Jimmy Barnes. They all put in & I had a great day anyway.

You would have to pay me to see that s****e, Eddie Van Halen. His douchebaggery in LA is stuff of legend.

So much for garage rock. Truth is it's over as soon as anyone across town knows about it. I haven't been to a show in years.
Well, I like Little Steven and am a devoted listener to his XM station. He gives exposure to and promotes a lot of up and coming great bands that play music I like. Not that bro county S**t. Not that hip hop s**t. Pure rock and and roll with some classic soul and r&b mixed in. And the good news is my kids listen to it too. From him I’ve learned about the Dollyrots and the Dahlmans, two bands I went out of my way to see and really enjoyed. Give it a shot Count. There is a diverse group of people who follow the LSUG promoted bands; 18 to 80. Pretty cool actually.

I realize he's knowledgeable and in the deeper scene. I also am sure that if there's a corporate interest nearby it'll co-opt and remarket anything, and it'll soon be out of the reach of the neighborhood of those who started it. I don't blame Steven, but he's in the current. Can't be helped, you're going to get pulled along.
It's punk rock time all over again before you know it.

Yes and no? I get the punk reference. I lived in Britain in ‘77. The Vibrators were as good as the Clash, better than the Sex Pistols. Signed a deal and really never made it. The record company destroyed them. I saw them live a couple of times. They should have been huge.
I do what I can to support the music I like. Attend shows, tell fiends, post here,...

Firebird sighting!

Yeah, I quite like Rival Sons. On record anyway. They were the support on the Black Sabbath “the end” tour. I made sure to get in early enough to catch them as I liked them. Very disappointed.

That has happened a few times with bands I’ve caught up with that we’re supporting bigger names. Pretty lacklustre.
I’m wondering if it is a ‘support band’ thing. They have the annoys about it and don’t put in ? Or they get a substandard go through the PA ?

Any theories anyone ?

I've definitely seen it be a PA/sound issue. A truly professional group will make the most of it, even if they aren't happy about the act they're paired with.

That was one of my favorite things about Skynyrd. When they were onstage, they were who you came to see. Thus, even if they weren't, they generally became so.

Two worst opening situations I saw.

1. Motörhead opening for WASP. Technically it was a double bill, but Motörhead played first. At least we got to leave shortly after WASP went on because they were so bad.

2. Canadian band The Tea Party opening for a crap band with guys I went to high school with.

Mine were:
1) "The top French rock band" in 1975 at Alex Cooley's Ballroom in Atlanta. Their playing was OK (not great), but their attitude sucked. They kept stopping to berate the crowd for not being more into them. Cleared the place out in well under a half hour.
2) Tucky Buzzard, warming up the crowd before Earth, Wind and Fire took the stage to warm up for Uriah Heep. They were decent, but nothing special. They seemed to be trying real hard to be another band or two, and who they were trying to be depended on the song.

There's some really good hip hop out there.
