man, played Friday night and thought I was done for the weekend. almost flew to LA (early morning flight) to meet my wife at her sister's for her birthday party but was burnt from the night before so I came up with an excuse and hung out for awhile. on my way out to meet a couple of buds (about 1:30PM) I get a text...."We start at 2:00, where are you?"....oh man...flipped a b1tch and ran back to my place to load...ironically I had unloaded the night before thinking I was leaving the car at the airport....thankfully I wasn't too far from the venue and was only a few minutes late....uuughhh!!.....the date never made it to my calendar....HATE it when that happens...

Last night was the first time in my career where I had to sub out my gig due to illness. Turns out it was legit because I’ve been in the ER all day and have to spend at least one full night here :/

I went to an 80s fest at Chastain Park in Atlanta. If anyone is/is not familiar, it is famous for having way too many 6 seated (or 8 maybe?) tables in the pit that people can buy for the package concerts. In addition to having people in attendance that are not familiar with the band b/c they bought the table, they bring full spreads, wine and cheese wheels, other snacks/beverages, candles, tablecloths, lazy Susans - you name it - and are often more interested in their own conversation and hand bags than the music. I'm sure people are also on their phones, too.
Anyway, as you can imagine all of this distraction from the stage can seriously piss off the bands. I've seen everyone from Duran Duran to Joan Jett at this place and it is always the same. Most bands make the best of it. Some do not.
Morrissey did show up so I will give him a pass. He was making fun of people eating meat from the local Pig N Chick. It was great.
The worst were Modern English at the aforementioned 80s fest. They seemed genuinely surprised that people were not paying attention to them and made comments berating the crowd both in-between songs and during. They could not wait to get off the stage. Totally unprofessional IMO. And I was paying attention!
A friend saw Crosby, Still, and Nash there in the late 80s. Part way through, they stopped the concert. Their crew brought a table on stage and turned it into a facsimile of the crowd’s tables, complete with wine, food, and candles. But they also had mics, and proceeded to make fun of the situation. Then the table was carried off, the stage was restored, and the concert resumed, with a more attentive audience. WishI had been there!
Holy crap, Mark! I hope this passes quickly and at least you enjoy the Morphine in the meantime!

There is a reason that people get hooked on it... (Morphine, not gigs. Actually maybe they hooked on gigging, but it doesn't cause the same kind of physical psychological and social disruptions. Maybe it does.).

I played percussion (djembe and cajon) last night for the first time in a year. I’ve really missed that. But then I got up at 6:15 (stupid early for me) to rehearse and then play bass at both services this morning. That meant I practiced both almost every night last week. I wish I had the time to so that regularly.
Oops! Was so effing tired when I posted this, I messed up. It was 9 to noon.

Thanks my friend. I've been at it since the very late 70s with one lesson which consisted of the notes on a fretboard. Had over a 20 year pause of not playing about 15 yrs ago, which I seriously regret. I don't consider myself a musician as such. I just can play bass--and love playing like I am really, really good. I thoroughly enjoy it, even if it's just me noodling around watching TV. Playing live and hitting a note and providing that massive low end never gets old, and I hope it never does.
