As long as we are discussing cooking, it's about time to try a brisket outside. That is an overnight kind of adventure if you do it right. And, that's why I haven't done it yet.

I roasted lamb on an olive wood charcoal fire last weekend, and it came out well. Except that I overcooked it a bit. The combination of olive wood smoke and the sweetness of lamb was different. I have come to dislike mesquite wood charcoal. It imparts a petrochemical taste that's not there with other kinds of charcoal. I don't know how that stuff got so popular.

The other thing that's good is goat. I generally marinade pork in a combination of vinegars and oils, with habanero peppers, ground black pepper, garlic, and sometimes ginger. The one time I marinaded goat, it didn't come out so well. So, no marinade for goat - just slow cooking. Not having enough time means none of this happens very often, but it's great when it does.

Because we play 'to the audience', we only plan the first 3 songs and watch for audience reaction to gauge what to play next. These are non concert/show gigs and we gots to be flexible. They may want dinner music to start-which is OK with us. Open up the Great American Songbook. No BFD.
We're paid to keep the 50+ y/o patrons happy, whatever that entails(we don't wear tails). My biggest problems are remembering lyrics to my leads and what key some of our less frequently played songs is in. We have at least 250 songs we can do(well)plus stuff that we can wing.
Lately we've been using 2 Bose L1's for PA[or my JBL EON One]-more than enough for the places we play and, because of their 180* dispersion, no monitors are needed-less to schlep and we hear what the audience hears.
Beyond that, I'm watching the dancers-hoping they don't fall into us(no stages)or taking requests. I do the announcing so ppl come to me-including while I'm singing.:rollno:
Is this during Happy Hour?

goat can be tricky....i like how Mexicans cook it in a red brick lined pit underground for hours....for lamb i like the way Greeks do it, slowly roasted with lemon juice, garlic, lots of oregano and black pepper..

This is a stunning '76, thank you for posting it here with us. I wanted to give it a separate post, I've added you to our club roster above. You're #758, please be welcome here, and feel free to share in the conversation, we veare around a bit because we're all long time inmates here, but we welcome newcomers.
Thanks very much. I have already learned a great deal here about these great instruments. When I took the photo, I think the lighting inadvertently made my bass shine. It does have some road wear on it and some nick's, but in great shape other wise.
Just did a setup check, cleaned the fingerboard and frets. Plays and sounds great. One of my favorites to play!

This brings up an interesting series of thoughts. What goes on in your mind is both the same and different from what I think about. One of the reasons I am wireless is the ability to wander around during soundcheck. It's not unusual for me to be responsible for the sound, since I'm the fool who owns a PA. I do a lot of jumping around on stage, even with the upright, when it's appropriate. With some bands, that would be distracting, so I don't do it. Given a choice, I'll dance around because it is part of playing and keeping time. For me anyway. There's a lot of on-stage communication that goes on, most of it serious, but some of it very playful. In one band, the singer and I have a standing joke that zings back and forth sometimes. It doesn't distract from playing, but it keeps us from being stiff. She has some stage fright, even after performing for decades, and that kind of thing helps with it. I also scan the audience. Making connections with people in the audience is fun. So is having energy bounce back and forth between the stage and audience makes it all worthwhile.

So, lots of things go on in my mind. There's also the OH, CRAP! I forgot the next song - we have only played it six million times and now I forgot! ... moment. Muscle memory kicks in often enough that it's usually not a problem, but the occasional train wreck makes for a lot of *** looks around the stage.

I try to take a few seconds 1/2 way through the performance - whether it is going great or clam-ish - and simply appreciate the fact that I am on stage playing live music with a band. This is something that was completely out of the question just a few years ago.

Goats always seem to be having fun. Even adult goats. They can smell kinda funky, but that's the only bad thing about goats.

That and they're basically stupid. You know that guy or gal who keeps getting into the same dumb situation over and over? That's goats. But they're still cool.

For @dukeorock

12 bar blues in F I think...

The Duke's got, the psych ward blues,
Oh the Duke's got, the psych ward blues,
He's going home to play with ribbon mikes,
And take T Bird pictures with his shoes.

He must have shoe cams. Even Agent 86 never had those.
