The different thicknesses become very personal and a part of your sound. I keep different thickness around in the studio because the tonal difference is way more noticeable to me when recording. I used the purple Tortex for many years, but found the blue ones (1mm) to be the secret sauce for me. Good snap, but enough thickness to dig in as much as you care to
That purple TorTex works best for me! It's my bass pick of choice. I've played everything from the orange TorTex (which work perfectly on electric guitar for me) up through (back in the day) thick, triangular tortoise shell and plastic picks, and a massive felt pick (ugh).

Yeah, purple TorTex is the one. Couldn’t remember the name, could only think purple tortoise... which just seems wrong somehow

Took delivery of a couple of 6m cables today. One has a black and white braided outer cover and 2 x straight jacks, the other is a standard black cable with 1 x RA and 1 x straight jacks. Ordered them after my old 6m cable started playing up the other day and the 3m cable is a safety hazard.

The Broughton HPF acts as a buffer, therefore effective cable length is 6m. Despite the straight jacks, the braided cable is likely to become the primary cable. I may put a Neutrik silent plug on one end -- then again, the silent plug may be the source of cable problems, therefore may just leave it alone.

All: Got some sweet black pup rings from Cataldo as I m considering reverting to the original look - black rings as opposed to chrome. Really nice quality, and no screw holes for a cleeeeeeen look. View attachment 3415410

Just to see how it would look I laid the rings on the active PRO IV and I think it dresses the bass up quite well.

It’s nice to have to contemplate decisions like these, eh?

Thanks again, Carlo!
Dang! I need those for mine as well....

I had tickets for the Nashville show May 5, but the damn hospital wouldn’t let me leave! Really wanted to see that. How was Simon Bonney?
Oh, man, really sorry to hear that. He was really good. Relatively short set, but then again he was opening. He was sitting, playing acoustic guitar and singing. Bronwyn was standing playing violin and also singing, mostly backup.

Contact Carlo. I have a set on order.

I used 3mm thick purple plastic triangles for a long time, but have gotten away from those completely now. it's the complete other direction - .88mm or so nylon like Bylar's. I'm not exactly light handed, so the lighter pick is more likely to stay in my fingers without a death grip.

I use mostly a (Fender) Medium pick, whatever that is. I keep my amp volume a bit on the high gain side so I can articulate with a light touch. A medium pick is easy to hold onto and I can cup it and play finger-style in the same song when needed. I switch back and forth depending on the song, but play more with a pick than without. I have a collection including a felt plectrum which all can offer something interesting. Never used the metal picks though... seems like it would trash strings pretty quickly.
I used quarters fairly often for a while. They work better than dimes.

Careful now. You don't want to be responsible for causing any rash behavior by revealing so much risque information. We will be sure to keep it in here where we can handle it and avoid letting the GP know.

Tell us more - obviously a more 'metallic' sound? and does it not abrade the strings?
It didn't abrade the strings as much as you might think. Maybe quarters are a softer metal than strings. The sound may have had just a little less initial white in it, but that's about the only difference between a quarter and a plastic pick. Softer picks have a whole lot more initial white, but a coin and a 3mm plastic triangle aren't all that different sounding.

I was a quarter man for a while myself, then got a half-gross of Jim Dunlop 100mm picks. I like them more, though I may find myself going after the .88s.

I didn't notice any harmful wear, though maybe I didn't stick with them long enough. I'm still mostly a finger player.

I thought the quarter had a much raspier initial transient, esp on rounds.

describe what you mean by 'white'

I saw about 10 minutes of The Blues Brothers on TV the other weekend, right at the concert bit.

Started planing a ThunderDuck...

P body in CAR, J maple neck - 2 cartoonish ducks at 12, and a single TB pickup. I’d go white or pearl white guard.

Too much crap rolls around my head.

I built myself one to go with my 'raised A' '57 clone.
