Thunderbird Club

If it were. Donald Duck Dunn clone, it would have to keep the original strings on it, right?
Absolutely. Bob Glaub told me he does the same with his Precisions, though he does sessions mostly with his H-22 these days. Duck was an idol and then a close friend.

Tell us more - obviously a more 'metallic' sound? and does it not abrade the strings?

I haven't even considered a metal pick for bass. I found exactly one stainless pick I liked for guitar; it was the same shape as the rounded triangle Dunlops, and fairly thin, It worked great; didn't seem to wear the strings significantly faster, and still had a good meaty sound, not just highs like I initially feared. I bought a dozen, gave a few to teens really getting into guitar, and slowly lost the rest. And of course could never find them again.

Continuing on with my new T-Bird adventures....

I just installed a strap extension, to lengthen my Levis’ padded leather strap. On my 7enders, I use this same strap, maxed out to 51.5 inches, pin to pin.

To get the T-Bird to lay at the same height as the 7enders, the extension maxed out at 56”, which lets the bass fall perfectly for me.

Baby steps...:hyper:

I have the two pickup model, same color and vintage. Really, really like it and play it out quite a bit. That said, it's nothing like my 68 II. The body is considerably thicker and heavier as is the neck. Out of town for work now but will measure body thickness difference and post when I get back Thursday. I had the belly cut done and it's way more comfortable (than it was) strapped on, specially if you wear it high. Although it sounded great with the original Artec pups, I slapped a pair of Thunderbuckers on it and it now sounds truly amazing. Earth rattling lows.....the price seems good...I paid 650 for mine without a case....the tuners were the only weak link when I got mine, hard to dial in tune and would not hold for very long..
Good luck if you go for it! Pretty awesome basses..

belly cut..

I read about someone on the LBO thinning the body down and adding the belly cut, I think I'll eventually go that route as well. First thing's first, putting the Greco Pickup into it to replace the Artec, getting different knobs, and changing the tuners to some Gotohs. Then get some covers and a finger rest. Got it for $700 + 2.9% for paypal fees.

score!...
I asked the guy that did the belly cut (which wasn't cheap) on mine about doing the exact same thing..he said it would get pretty expensive and that because of the massive neck and headstock the neck dive would likely become worse...note the 68 headstock vs the BaCH..

@Chucky Stiletti - trying to recall, were you the club member with a preference for Roto Swing 66 nickel round strings?

I had an unopened set laying around and decided to install them on my new Gibby Memphis LP bass. They do in fact sound great. Much better than the Roto flats that were on it before. Not sure how long they'll last, but so far, so good. I can see where these we would sound nice on a TBird as well. Not keen on the bayby blue silks though.

You could change to the SS ones, which have red silks. Or if you like the nickel, check out the SIT Powerwound.

Black Beauties are on the 2001 are beginning to sound a bit tired. I forgot they wear out. It proves that bass is getting played a lot. It's going to get Cobalt flats this time around. I'm pretty sure the '15 has Bass Burners on it, but I don't remember now. They sound good, whatever they are. So much for the scientific method.

I don't get on well with stainless strings, just too bright for my tastes. Never played SIT strings on my basses but have had good luck with them on my guitars. Maybe when the Rotos go south I'll give some SITs a try.

Careful now. You don't want to be responsible for causing any rash behavior by revealing so much risque information. We will be sure to keep it in here where we can handle it and avoid letting the GP know.

Sorry, it was the most exciting event of the week and I felt it would be unfair not to let others share the joy of such a happy event.
