Thunderbird Club

I had a reason to wander through Emerald City Guitars today, and they have the '64 that's on Reverb up on the wall. I'm itching to take it down and play it, but for the price, I'm almost afraid to look at it. They have a '99 right next to it. The '99 appears to have a Badbird bridge, and the tag says it has Lull pickups. The knobs are vintage looking gold knobs. Whoever owned it chromed it out and thinks a lot like some of us here. They have an asking price of over 2K, so it's out of my league, but it sure looks good. Wrapping a mitt around the '64 and then the '99 was interesting. The nut feels about the same width, but the '99 has a slightly flattened back. The '64 has rounder back. I didn't need that information. Now I really want a '64.

That '99 is pretty cool, somebody put some effort in that bass - I like it!

Now you know why a couple of us love our vintage NR's.

OK, here it goes. They have a lot more lime green in the sound. It's not so much thick or bright as lime green instead of turquoise. The sound still has the great Thunderbird black around the edges with an electric blue edge, but there's more yellow and less blue. But not in a bad way like the even cream of creek scum green that a J can have.

There is one person here who can probably translate that. Or maybe not.
Well I'm looking to avoid turquoise and was hoping for more magenta with a hint of chartreuse. Clearly not for me then.

The price is a little ridiculous, isn't it?
2.195$ -> 1.975€, these prices are right (if they can be considered right) for a new instrument ...Lull pups are great, yes, and so are Hipshot tuners...but it still remains a 20 y.o., used and heavily modded bass...boh :cautious:

LOL - I'm with you. I'm leaning much more to a deep blood red burgundy center eventually darkening to a black cherry color as the tone fades off. None of that mamby pamby turquoise and moss cream sound in my mix.

There's easily $800.00 of replacement hardware on that bass, the bridge is a Lull Two Point, in '99 the bass was likely about $1200. The holes for the Three Point should have been done better IMO.

Yeah, the parts are great and expensive, for sure...but it's still a modded instrument :)
Well it's got history, which is also mojo. That combined with its pedigree makes it's own value. It's a subjective thing- you buy into it or you don't. But I'd rather have a great instrument, possibly made so because of its history, than a factory-new, high mark axe with possibly lesser parts.
