Thunderbird Club

I'll contribute to our survival..
20190814_215255.jpg

2013 'Bird testing the Peavey IPR 1600 poweramp, fronted by the Trace Elliot (UK) SMX preamp I'd traded for my SMX 250 powered head. My cabs were all 4 ohm, and I wanted to be able to run more than one cab.

The Peavey weighs less than 7 lbs, which is pretty hilarious. Picking it up makes me chuckle a little. Running 1 side at 4 ohms looses 600 alleged watts; both sides work @ 530 alleged watts.
Through the new-to-me Xsonics 2155CF cab (not pictured here, that's ye olde DIY 210) this is pretty danged impressive. That one's an odd design: 2 15s in a "push/pull" (?...) configuration with a mids driver and a tweeter. Lots of big lows, in fact I've been learning to radically alter my eq to get what I want out of it for non-dub gigs, and it's not disappointing.

I played the Tbird through it for a while the other night and it's becoming something I like a lot. Whether that's my ears getting broken in or the eq having the desired effect remains to be seen, but I think my little 'birdie is getting to use her voice, and that's what I'm after.
The only photo I have of the new cab is with my MIJ Pbass and the "Toyota SR505" 5 string, so I'll get this into the realm of reality with a proper cell-phone pic in a bit here. Besides, I'm getting the feeling I need an exciting new 'Bird shot in our club. 'Bird as in bass, I mean... :bassist:

Is it still Thunderbird Thursday?

I thought it may be best to consult the hive mind here before venturing out into GP and the input of @dukeorock would be appreciated greatly.

I am in the market for a cheap inexpensive cab. Something small and 100W would be plenty. I need a cab to keep at my brother's place for playing there (now that it will be an option). It won't be used a lot, so price is a meaningful parameter.

I have my local L&M on the look out for used Ampeg or Traynor 1x15 or 2x10, as well as Kijiji/Craigslist but used Traynors seem to hold value very well and there just aren't many used Ampegs unless you are looking for 4x10 or 8x10. So I started looking at used Ampeg and Fender combos. Still coming up empty.

So I had a thought. L&M are blowing out replacement speakers (Eminence made OEMs for Yorkville & Traynor). I can pick up a 15" 200W speaker for $35. Eminence has some suggested designs on their website and I can always download WinISD software for speaker calculations. The TS parameters are available. So hive mind, is it worth having a go at building a 1x15? Or am I underestimating the difficulty/effort/pitfalls?

Well time is money, so there's budgeting consideration for a diy.
Maybe an old 1x15, like an old-school Peavey (cheep) with the aluminum side rails, drop an Eminence Legend 15 into it. That would be a nice sounding installation box.

Yes:smug:

@MCF or @Gaolee
Any info you can share on String types and clearance between strings and top of neck pup of your 2015 birds would be very appreciated. I'm zeroing in on the chorus issue but would love to hear from some that aren't experiencing the issue. Thx in advance!
I’ll try and get info for you this weekend. Cobalts are on it right now.

So much of my youth listening to them. Twin leads Turner’s bass; particularly his tone when he started using a Tbird. I bought the box set and listen to it a lot.
Great playing, decent sound for 1973, and you can actually hear chords, not some fuzzed out mess. The 'Bird/Acoustic combination is choice.

Do you take Glucosamine? It seems to help me.
Is Glucosamine Good for Joint Pain?

There is some evidence that glucosamine may improve WOMAC scores in mild to moderate osteoarthritis. However, it is not a cure all for any orthopaedic problem.

My standard disclaimer about taking medical advice from random strangers on the internet always applies - and that includes me. There is no substitute for examination by an appropriately trained and licensed health professional.

Be mindful of what you listen to, even from a health professional... get more than one one angle (phys therapy, orthopedist, chiro) and when possible more than one opinion.

I'll just add that the medical industry (I said that correctly) is pretty well loomed over by the pharmaceutical and insurance industries. Just be mindful is all, think actively.

A little learnings never hurt anyone.

Having said that, there is something of an art to reading the medical literature*. Do the reading; use Dr. Google if need be for that so that you can ask informed and intelligent questions. PubMed is a very useful resource if you can manage good searches and are adept at reading abstracts. There are no "doctor's orders" there is a treatment plan negotiated by all parties involved.

*medical literature is not WebMD or even Harrison's Internal Medicine. It means the scientific animal and clinical research as published in scientific journals.

Ha! I meant to post this in another thread!

My reply stands. And is actually decent standalone advice.

:)

Thunderbirds rock!
Could've been posted anywhere, yep.
