So if I'm reading right, the Gibson pickups are a different size from the Epiphone ones?

it depends on the Epiphone :

Epi' Classic Pro = Gibson PUs / Epi' Pro = ??? / Epi' "standard" = different

Will look around for some sort of guide that explains the evolution of T-Birds through the years, Wikipedia has some but it's not exhaustive, there must be something, I thought maybe this forum.

As already mentioned a few pages back www.flyguitars.com is one of the best resources for this...

My friend has a 79 TBird and I've asked him to send me a shot of the neck heel so I can post it. That way we can compare the one listed in the classifieds, which I would love to own

Arf bad news.... not gibson shape, apparently, there are about 2 or 3 mm shorter...
The pickup is clamped in the cavity or there is still space around?

Well... I picked up some vinyl automotive pinstripe tape yesterday because curiosity got the best of me. Spent about an hour this morning putting this on. I kinda like it! I guess I'll leave it for now and see how it holds up for the $3 invested.

Not a perfect job, but not terribly ugly.

Such a mystery....maybe someone stuck a misaligned three point and '76 pick guard on a '64. That would be a real steal. A Greco has more pronounced "wicked" hook on the headstock.

And Grecos are set neck- that appears to be neck through- I can't see a seam where neck and body would join. Also the nut width looks to be too narrow for a Greco.

My black '77 the strap button was moved when I got it, personally I like the button centered on the heel. The neck heel on this bass is more rounded on the treble side, I don't know if this is for ergonomics or legendary Gibson QC.
