Thunderbird Club

Not even going to take a pic of my Chrysler Town and Country Limited! It does have black leather interior. Black is still a thing, right?
The Transit Connect I drive these days is so forgettable that taking a picture wouldn't work. The camera would see it, but would not remember seeing it, just like everyone else.

The pixie dust '01 got some exercise on Thursday night. It really is just about perfect. It has Black Beauties on it for now. It probably always will. Why mess with pixie dust?

Went down to Newport for the weekend. God I hate driving in SoCal anymore. Anyway, didn’t take the travel rig. Wife and daughter went to do girl stuff. I went to music stores to exercise the fingers.

Sam Ash in Westminster was first. Typical lousy setups on the basses hanging on the wall. Three birds; a bolt-on standard Epi, a Goth and a burst VP. The force was strong in that one. It was actually in tune. Impeccably built. First rate fit and finish. And man, I love the pickups. It might have chosen me but for a too noticeable dead spot at A# on the G. So I resisted. An Alan Woody was unplayable as set up. And I got to try a Les Paul Jr.! Nice sounding and playing shortie. I want one (blue of course, the one there was red). But why oh why does Gibson let basses leave the factory with unfinished fret ends?

Next stop was GC Fountain Valley. That store usually has a lot of basses and some interesting used stuff. Today the bass section had maybe 60 basses. And three, count ‘em three Rics; a Jet Glo, A Maple Glo and a Fire Glo. I’ve decided I’m no longer gassing for one. Still haven’t played one that feels right. No birds, Epis and of course no Gibsons. And nothing used worth noting in guitars, basses or amps (I’m kind of in the market for a decent Marshall guitar amp).

So I amused myself for a couple of hours. Takeaway from today is that the Guild Junior Jet with mini buckers is a great buy at $299. The VP is awesome (but everyone here knows that). And Gibson still has some QC work to do.

That's too bad about the dead spot on the VP. I haven't noticed any on the two I have (or the '64 or '76, or the '64 Epi Embassy for that matter). In the late 70s and early 80s it seems half the basses I played or owned had a dead spot on the D or G someplace.

Yep. I haven’t really experienced a seriously noticeable dead spot on my two bolt on Epis or the ‘15. I’ve got a Fender P that is a touch weak at the C on G (the common spot) but it doesn’t bother me. This was a bit surprising; everything else about it was fabulous.

Interesting.

I have resisted trying a VP so that I don't end up needing to take it home. And I quite like the LP bass too. I might have to get one in time (and it will be blue as well). I have wanted to like an Allen Woody, but they just don't work for me. And I think that the Guild Jr Jet is an great bass and a great value for the money. And after trying a Ric I discovered that they just aren't for me.

Great minds I suppose.

Yep. The LP Jr. is a sweat little bass. The VP has seriously huge b***s.

The one and only VP i got to try, that was at a Sam Ash in Queens, (when i was still living in Queens), was amazing. Needed a slight set up. But even with totally shot rounds. Still had that growl and grind.

In my constant quest for the illusive perfect string match, I slapped on a oldish set of GHS Boomers on my white VP. I really liked it. Big thick bottom and just enough mid and upper crunch. Might turn into a thing. I don't like Boomers on a lot, but sometimes it's a great match.
Really wanted new strings for the upright but the ones I wanted were $225.
So now I’ve got Blisters On Me Fingers!!!

Limo.

The van is a ruse to fool groupies.
It in part is a ruse, I like to travel as low profile as possible. The van has darkened windows and absolutely no stickers labeling it a band van. I'm more worried about thieves than groupies at this point.

Funny you mentioned that. I started a thread a couple years ago about putting(or not putting)any band related stickers on one's vehicle. It(the thread) didn't go far, but ya get the idea. "Hey! Come steal my[stuff]!"

Iv'e made a point of not putting stickers on my vehicle for the same reason.
Of course, I went and put a large magnetic sign with the name/logo of my 80s band on the side. Of course I did.
Maybe that can come off now...

Then you can see what color the vehicle is s'posed to be.:D

IF I ever get my new van back, I'm planning to put black perforated vinyl on the inside of the rear side and liftback windows. They're already factory tinted about as deep as is legal, but every little bit helps.
