Epiphone Embassies NBD followup:
I've had and used these exclusively for a month now. The white one (CTS pots, series switch, wearing nickel Slinkys) at practice, the black one all stock wearing nickel Lowriders at home.
Both basses continue to impress, next to the white on a stand, is a $4,700 Dingwall, next to the black is a $2,700 T5 (both 5ers), neither has been touched since I got the Embassies.
Looking at fit and finish, the white is somewhat better, the black a little rougher, but nothing that impacts anything from 3 feet away. Both are absolute tone monsters; again, the white is slightly better.
Other than the differences listed above, the white goes through a Markbass LMII/Audiokinesis Thunderchild 15, the black into a Markbass CMD 112h. Normally the 112 has sounded deeper/punchier (typical Markbass low mid emphasis?); however, the white one has the edge here, and I'm not using the series switch in this comparison.
At some point I will have them side by side for a true comparison, and may put slinkys on the black.
Negatives? None really. I can't get the action as low as I'd like on the white, so may have to spring for a Supertone. The black will get lower action, but I think the fingerboard is dyed, my fretting fingers always get black tips after playing it. I may upgrade the pots on it (probably not until something goes bad), and may do the mid switch when I do, but don't think it's needed.
That's it gang, over the moon with these basses. Yeah, not sexy like Thunderbirds, but IMHO, ergonomically superior, and at 7.lb 11 ozs and 7 lbs 7 ozs, my back loves them.
Buy one while they're still available, not even kidding here, and I'm usually not the Fanboy type.
