Thunderbird Club

I’m thinking it would be really fun to have a short scale mahogany NR TBird shaped object with one of these in it:

I think the number of us in non gigging bands has gone up lately. Those gigging are in the decided minority now for sure. I have no idea when I'll even practice with others.
And I just learned to play just like Geddy Lee......
Not even Geddy is gigging now

I've been looking-longingly-at a 2013 NR THUNDERBIRD. It's about 1/8" wider at the nut. I'm fairly certain my short, fat hands would be able to deal with it.
That’s only 3.175 mm Mike. 3 mm is nothing.

 Says I, not in any danger of needing to open wallet.

As long as it's not 7.62 mm.;) The TBird looks nice but it's in Michigan-no chance to try out. Only slightly closer to me than you.

Where are people on picks (with their THUNDERBIRDS)? Here is where I am and am wondering if there are further picking experiments I need to do.

Perhaps part of the difficulty I had with picks was that I was trying to use 1.0mm picks. I got a few to try out from my local L&M - a couple of 0.45mm and 0.5mm. Being thinner, they are easier to grip; a little pressure and they flex and fit just right. They also snap nicely over the strings. They make Ace of Spades pretty easy to play.

What thicknesses are others using, and what do you like/dislike about that thickness vs. thicker/thinner?
Purple tortoise.

but I’m struggling in the transition.

Although in my recent foray into Uke I’ve been able to switch from fingers to leather pick. it does sometimes go flying off.

Just starting guitar, starting with skinny pick.

I am hoping if I get comfortable with a pick there it will translate across to ‘bird

Well with all the cancelled gigs and all the bars closed, this time in quarantine has given me some time to get some good practice in. But more importantly, it's got me redoing my whole "Hi-Fi" setup. Should be picking up a pair of Boston Acoustic A400s soon to go with my '68 Sansui 5000. Next upgrade is a new turntable, aiming for a Dual 1219 most likely. Anyone else into old HiFi gear?

Not on purpose, but now that the stereo is old, the answer is that I'm into it. It still works. The newest is about a 15 year old CD player/recorder that can record a signal to a CD. It was the thing back when I thought I was going to have to record all my old LPs onto CD since they were wearing out and were becoming irreplaceable. Little did I know that CDs were going to vanish but vinyl would come back. The amp and cassette deck are Denon from the '80s. Turntable is Sony from the '80s. Speakers are Klipsch from the '70s. It doesn't need all that much power to be completely satisfying in place it is. No remote speakers, no wireless, no remote, no nonsense. Measuring time by the record side is a still a fully functional habit.

I’m into old gear, like @Gaolee cause that is what I have.
Dual turntable, Denon amp & CD player, Sanyo cassette(!) and a tuner my Dad put together from a kit. Mordaunt Short speakers.

some bits need repairs, alas

So... my daughter found a song she really likes. It's called Blackbird Song and it's from the Walking Dead series. She brought it up on YouTube and asked me to play it. Very simple song, very basic bass line, almost a depressing song, but then again the movie isn't exactly Breakfast at Tiffanys.

After playing it once I handed the (Thunderbird) bass to her and asked her to play it. She was shocked that I'd let her play one of my basses. I told her if she could play the song I'd give the bass to her and we could modify it in any way she wants to personalize it for her. Needless to say, she really got into playing the song, and even preferred to use a pick (she was having problems playing finger style due to her long finger nails). So it looks like the FrankenGoth will have a new owner in the family and may go under the knife again.

Question for the club members here - can you think of any other songs that are along the same vein as the one above and would be easy for a beginner to pick up? I'd like to keep her interest up.

reminds me of someone but not sure what. Also sounds like a stripped down Traffic on quaaludes.

Perhaps try New Year's Day (U2). A song that the bass carries, is easy for most people (even millennials) to recognize, and is easier to play on a THUNDERBIRD that many might think. The verse is R & 3rd through Am C Em and the chorus pedals 8ths.
