Thunderbird Club

I got to check my SWR goliath cab & the top left speaker is rigid. It doesn't budge, the others move perfectly - if i push them gently with the eraser of a pencil - so i'm gonna try the 9v battery test. If it moves then the speaker works perfectly, & i just need to wire it properly. But i'm pretty confused as to how one of 4 could be rigid like this whilst the others not :O

Found one, Now all I have to do is convince the lucky guy in Singapore to give it up LOL

Shouldn't be a big a deal considering it's the only known Gibbo lefty 5er in existance...

From my experience a driver should move if you push on the cone gently, if it's frozen that means there is a mis alignment between the voice coil and the "O Slot" it sits in, there is only about .003 clearance between them SO it be frozen is usually bad news & may need a recone or basket replacement if modular i.e. Peavy "Black Widows" Hope it works out mate!

That's a fused voice coil, as in melted. The speaker needs to be reconed. If you go with another speaker instead, make sure it's the same impedance as the other three. The correct thing would be to recone the SWR, then all speakers would have the same specs...some people think that's important. Probably not with an early 70s Peavey head.

Yup VERY important, also be sure not to use that cab till you recone that driver being that the impedance variance that a locked driver can cause may damage your amp!!

Thanks guys, the only time i've used it was when i tried it out before buying & then after i got it back home just to test how the peavey sounded. But Am looking into reconing it - trying to find someone who can do it. & yeah i've deduced it was the voice coil/magnet misalignment. Checked for replacement speakers & those PAS swr speakers go for top dollar (which isn't something i got right now)
So i guess once i have a bit more cash, i'll send the speaker to SWR (in case i don't find a local shop that could do it for less) cause the general speaker components are in good shape it's really just the voice coil that's not working.

& finding something to replace the "blown" PAS original speaker is no where close.

Not necessarily...

I would suggest you wait throwing a lot of cash at that bridge until you tried the original one. The original 3-point may take a little while to get used to, but works perfectly once you get the hang of it.

If you then decide you don't like it, or it won't give you the adjustability you like - You could always mod the bass with either the Babicz or the Hipshot Supertone bridge...

Some group members like those two bridges, and then others prefer the original 3-point (incl. our Queen and myself)....
