I haven't checked where my CP Thunderbird was made and I don't; care because it plays great.

My JC is made in China. It is a well made bass and plays great as well.

I don't buy China made goods ( unless I have no choice ) on principle only. I don't like making a Communist regime more economically powerful.

Good news - With some stretch (and a series of grimaces that I will claim is bass face indicating I'm feeling the groove) I can now reach F# (E on the Thunderbird tuned D standard). Tiring and makes my shoulder ache, but progress!

I can understand that. For the 20th anniversary JC, there was no other choice.

Professionally, I have been very resistant to dealing with China. There is rampant theft of intellectual property and cheating on agreements. I will also not travel there as I fear arbitrary detention as has happened to a pair of Canadians as part of a diplomatic issue.

I have the Schecter Sixx in Pelham Blue. It is a very well made bass that plays and sounds great. It has an active EMG PX-JX vol-vol-tone-kill switch setup so you can get a pretty good range of sounds out of it. It is my heaviest bass and is more like an RD than a Thunderbird in heft and size (including the neck) but not uncomfortable. I got a good deal on mine so no complaints about the price.

A good deal on a used or blem white CP (or another VP) would be the main things now likely to get me to buy a third bass soon. Or of course a steal on a Gibson. Any pointers to a sub-$1,000 60s Gibson Thunderbird (the original, not the melty "NR" Fender-mollifier)?

For me it has less to do with the concept of Communism, it's how they treat their people and for me as a potential consumer of their products - it has more to do with their flooding the market with cheap crap. Especially when it's clear that they also make very high quality goods. We see it dramatically in our world - crap tuners that look like quality Schallers, Grovers and Gotohs, cheap crap made by wage-slaves for every part of the basses we play. Chinabackers, MM & Hofner clones et al. I don't buy MIC crap because it being cheap isn't an excuse for taking advantage of people in another far away country - and I don't want that crap on any bass I build or own.

The concept of Communism like the concept of religion as pure as they might start out, are invariably corrupted by money and power for the few over the many.

I learned many basses ago to never say "This is my last bass" because there is no way for me to promise that. You never know what might turn up when you least expect it. My wife learned long ago not to ask me if I am selling a bass when a new one arrives. I USED to always say I was going to sell one to make room for the next one but after a while it was obvious to me that if it wasn't crucial to sell something, I wasn't going to. That is why I have a stupid amount of basses.
