Thunderbird Club

This one is barely 3 blocks from where I'm sitting just now......It's all I can do to not auction off a Kidney to buy it.

Also :drool::drool:. If only Epi would release one of these, complete with a finish duplicating this aged burst. Or even Gibson.

Might just be my age impaired selective recollection kicking in, but it seems like just a few short years ago one could find a bird of this age and condition in the $3500 to $4500 bracket. Seems like they've taken a $2000 to $4000 jump in just the last couple of years. Wish I had bought one back then.

It's because about five people are buying them all up. At least five of the five are in this club.

Ummm......
Brand new, still in the shipping box. What were they new? Kind of a bummer that it seems to be offered by a speculator. But you gotta do what you gotta do. Buy it Ken! If it weren’t for this COVID thing, I’d think about taking the 11 hour round trip drive to get it for you just to be an enabler. I’ve never seen a lefty in the wild.

The "ummmm" was that this guy is insane. I paid $1500. Lefty Gibson Thunderbirds aren't exactly rare.

Happened to me a few months ago. Posted on here asking. Crickets. They seem to be an odd size if you want the exact replacement. Luckily, my son found it on the floor for me. I’m loathe to remove the covers. If anybody knows the answer, I’ll do my best to keep the info handy for us if we need it again.
Same for me. I just called Gibson and same response. He suggested StewMac.

Completely unrelated but that Gold Thunderbird in GBassNorth's avatar is mindblowingly good-looking.

I love your collections guys! Spread the Thunderlove!

We're so very happy to help you own more Thunderbirds! :)

Your basses are the stuff of dreams!
I'm a different sort of collector. I like to have one of each. That's why I sold my Goth to get the Pro V. I wouldn't play one knowing I have the other one. This is just like my motorcycle/car collection. One off-roader. One classic. One sportscar/bike. One daily... That sort of thing.

If you are curious, my collections are:

Basses. Thunderbird Pro V, 70s vibe Jazz bass, Squier Jaguar Bass. (I have other instruments, like Synths, Guitars, classical strings...)

Motorcycles: ´73 Honda CB350Four Cafe/Brat, Triumph Thruxton R, Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, BMW Urban G/S

Cars: ´75 Alfa Romeo Giulia Junior 1600, Volvo V90 CC, Land Rover Defender 110.

The first one in each list is the one I couldn't live without. Thunderbird, CB350F and the Alfa.

Given all our idle time in quarantine, I think I'm going to finally bite the bullet and refinish the BaCH bird. Since the color I'm going for (something near Willow Mist Metallic, a pale moss green metallic, somewhat like aged pelham blue or aged ice blue metallic) isn't really available from Reranch, I'm thinking of going this route:
Touch Up Spray Paint | AutomotiveTouchup

I can get just about any color matched in a spray can, and it dries much faster than standard nitro. After that, I'm debating using Reranch clear nitro or their clear coat, though I'm leaning Reranch so that it will age like an old finish instead of resist UV. The site says it is an acrylic lacquer, which is what most of the old custom colors were, so I should think it'd be compatible with a nitro top coat, anyone have any wisdom on the matter?

Dylan, what kind of paint is the spray can stuff? As long as it's a lacquer I think you're fine.

I think most people just get the closest fit and replace all three. That’s what I thought I’d end up having to do. If you find a source for the super tiny ones, let me know....
Do these look like the ones?

I used these on my IV that had one missing when I got it. Fit perfect, just have to make the top black to match.

Ten years ago my 64 IV has been appraised for around $7000, by the local vintage guy. It has had the headstock repair but other than the dark paint you would never know it. It's been stable for decades. I have no idea what such a base with actually so far, and mine's in really good shape, and seems to be better than most I happen to see. (Excluding Geddy's, of course!) I never recall seeing an actual price of one that sold, so it's really hard to say what the "going rate" actually is. Of course that varies from person to person. As is often said, it just depends on what any given individual is willing to pay. I don't know that I would ever pay $7,000+ since I have one already (and it has both PUs;)), if I didn't have one and knew how wonderful they sound I just might do it.
