I'll intrude if you don't mind. I used some Rotos on a VP just for kicks and I thought they sounded really good. I thought they had some good bite and punch and we're not cranky or noisy, at least the way my amp was set. Sounded really nice, when I thought they might be too aggressive or harsh sounding. I think I prefer Boomers which have good punch and are a little bigger sounding and not quite as bright, but the Rotos will be back on at some point and I will play out their life span.Question for you Miles_ONeal ...when I sold you the Epi VP, I had just put Rotosound 66's on it, based on input from this forum, but never really played it before I sent it your way.
I'm usually a TI jazz flat guy (have 'em on all my basses, including the VP I purchased after I regretted selling the first one to you, lol), but I just got my hands on a '78 Gibson RD Standard (passive w/ two humbuckers and none of those annoying Moog / active wonky electronics), and my luthier suggested Roto 66's for it.
So...here's the question (about time I got to the point, eh?)...did you keep the Roto 66's on the VP? If so, what's your take on them?
I'm thinking I'll have the Roto's put on (XL since the RD allows for through-body), and I can always swap 'em out for my TI flats if I don't like them...but I'd like to hear your experience w/ them.
(I'm a finger player...never use a pick...so I don't want noisy strings)
That works.... I think we do that song. We don't do any songs about butter..... LOLHow 'bout smooth like Tennessee Whiskey?![]()

Interesting that they are NPS on a round core. Both the BBs and Dragon Skins are stainless steel on round core. But certainly feel different.I've been using Coated DRs. I like the colored ones. Pretty long lasting and a well made strings.
"HI-DEF NEON™ BLUE Colored Bass Strings feature a luminescent coating designed to give your stage presence a little extra pop, especially under UV black lighting. They feature a round core wire and a silver-plated nickel-plated steel wrap. All strings include the neon colored K3™ coating, delivering longevity, more projection, fewer unwanted overtones, plus enhanced clarity and articulation than standard, uncoated strings. Yet, they provide the same protection due to corrosion and perspiration as well as increased tone life that coated strings are known for."

Who does he think he is? @godofthunder59 ?Braggart! All those NRs in one place....![]()
yeah, when you see this, run...Bad idea in a garage. Over time the static electricity builds up in the concrete. You eventually get twin lightning bolts up the legs. When they meet, OUCH!
You didn't ask me, but I'll chip in anyway...
I like RS66 on my bird. They have an aggressive sound that I think comes from the brightness. They have good bass and good mids (unlike Prosteels).
Finger noise - that's a feature, not a bug...Actually, I don't think the finger noise is terrible - I have noticed much more with other strings. But, I think finger noise is more prominent with steel (vs nickel). Finger noise is also about technique - spending time working on changing position well has helped me reduce finger noise. Maybe flats make you lazy...

I put the red ones on the P-Bird, because it's red, and why not? For us shallow people, it's all about the visuals anyway, right?Interesting that they are NPS on a round core. Both the BBs and Dragon Skins are stainless steel on round core. But certainly feel different.
I not really a fan of colored strings, but the black looks pretty good on the modern Gibson and sounds really good.

Did you do the pg?
Yeah. I replaced the White Pickguard with the Pearl one, then ordered a piece Abalone and cut out the Bird and glued. Seems to do alright.
Also cut Abalone circles to glue into the Witches Hat knobs.
The Abalone was a special Turquoise Blue color, was tough to cut. But I used a brand new set of Hair Cutting scissors. They were sharp enough to do it.
Makes her a little different.
BTW the Blue strings are a cool addition. But DR discontinued the Peacocks a while back and I had only two extra sets. I just broke down and ordered a set of the Neon Blues. Guess it will still look ok. The colored DRs are Silver Plated Nickel, then Color Coated.
