Thunderbird Club

Yeah. I replaced the White Pickguard with the Pearl one, then ordered a piece Abalone and cut out the Bird and glued. Seems to do alright.

Also cut Abalone circles to glue into the Witches Hat knobs.

The Abalone was a special Turquoise Blue color, was tough to cut. But I used a brand new set of Hair Cutting scissors. They were sharp enough to do it.

Makes her a little different.

Always thought the Thunderbird emblem on the my white VP would look good in Abalone for a nice contrast. Not something I could pull off I don't think.

More old wood!

OK, I'll see about giving them a call manana-or tomorrow, whichever comes first. I'd asked for specifics and a pic or 2 of the 'neck repair' and also what the total would be sent to the nearest GC, plus tax. And a recappable tire.
Then I'd need to see what it would run to have it refinished. Not a fan of white. I was thinking more like puce or taupe, maybe digital USN camo.:rollno: Ooh, ecru!
ETA: Now I've got it: SP Daylight red for the wings and Daylight orange for the center section and neck with black for the hs.
One more thought: ACL purple for the wings and aluminum for the center/neck with black hs and "Champion"in purple on the aluminum(color) pg.
Well, I just got off the phone with that GC with the white VP for $450. The ad says 'neck repair'-not repaired. The guy I talked to says it's pretty bad and prolly needs a new neck. Since it's 'neck-through', that sounds kinda like $450. for a set of pups. And some old strings. But. It does have a Ron Jon sticker.:smug:

Thought y'all might be interested in an update.

Did you tell him that they probably ought to change it from "neck repair" to "NEEDS neck repair"? That's a pretty significant difference.

What I did was copy the T-Bird from the Original Pickguard with my printer onto a piece of paper. In fact, I think I enlarged slightly, (thought it would look better). I cut it out, and then traced (fine point black felt pen) the edges onto the piece of Abalone that I had bought. I used a piece of the mylar double stick tape to hold the paper cutout in place on the Abalone sheet to trace properly. Then carefully cut with a new pair of hair cutting scissors. CA glue stuck it on.

And coat with the CA to the edge, but don't apply too much, so to not squeeze out when applying.

Easy peezy. Just carefully cut.

That's cool. So you were able to cut the abalone with scissors? I was assuming a jewelers scroll type saw would be required. Looks very nice.

That they want $450 for it is astonishing. It’s a free market and all, but that’s a total ripoff.

So true. Technique comes into play in many ways and allows a wider variety of colours to use. As a related example, a lot of players like their strings just slightly in the fret buzz range to add a bit of texture/grit to the notes, especially as a primarily finger-style player. As someone who uses a pick 80% of the time, I prefer to keep that buzz in check (a bit higher action) because a pick will accentuate fret-buzz. When I'm setting up a bass's action, I'll do the final tests using a pick and if I can play every fret w/o buzz - I'm there. The action is still pretty low, but just above the fret-buzz height.

master technique dude Scott Devine illustrates the "rasp secret"

WRT Finger noise - try playing with treble way up. It accentuates finger noise - it makes you much more aware of what you are doing right/wrong for finger noise. That was what I was doing to improve technique.

WRT fret buzz - Geddy is well known for a little bit of fret buzz. Likewise I set things up for a tiny bitt of buzz if I play hard enough (but clean also doable). And buzz starts to sound good with some drive...

Yep. It cut fine with scissors. Mind you real sharp and well made scissors. That is why I used the Hair Cutting ones. They have a small very sharp cutting edge. And that is necessary.
