Thunderbird Club

Sent a request via their website to the folks at Babicz yesterday, got this in a reply email today, in case anyone else is interested in the same info...

"Hi Kara,
We only have black 3 points for the Epiphone at the moment. I do expect to have chrome before the end of the year, so please 'stay tuned'! Thanks~JC

End of the year?
Too bad you're not looking for a Hipshot. I bet they're in stock.

;)I think he's draining all the power out so it'll be safe to work on. Those tube amps can pack a wallop!

Bad idea in a garage. Over time the static electricity builds up in the concrete. You eventually get twin lightning bolts up the legs. When they meet, OUCH!

I've been getting into woven straps lately. On eBay thay are sometimes referred to as "hippy straps" ... whatever, because it's a '60s thing. They can be pretty cheap to very expensive (if original/vintage) I've got a few now from the more affordable side. The better quality ones have leather ends, and the cheap ones have vinyl ends. Both work but the leather end ones are nicer.

My favorite guitar strap is a pretty old leather-end strap. Unfortunately, it was short for guitar, and much too short for bass.

Haven't really made up my mind yet. Might put on a stock one! :nailbiting:

But, it is August, which means "by the end of the year" translates as "within the next four months or so". Which, under normal circumstances, would be about 3 & 1/2 months longer than needed to get paint done. With coronavirus f!@#$ing with everything, who knows?

Might work out as perfect timing! :smug:

Very nice! I like the metal pickguard.

However, I am not a fan of Cars 2. Mater solves the mystery without having all the details he needed and gave details that he had no way of knowing. Just a sloppy script. Cars on the other hand was a classic tale of the arrogant urbanite coming to understand and respect the country bumpkins.

Question for you Miles_ONeal ...when I sold you the Epi VP, I had just put Rotosound 66's on it, based on input from this forum, but never really played it before I sent it your way.
I'm usually a TI jazz flat guy (have 'em on all my basses, including the VP I purchased after I regretted selling the first one to you, lol), but I just got my hands on a '78 Gibson RD Standard (passive w/ two humbuckers and none of those annoying Moog / active wonky electronics), and my luthier suggested Roto 66's for it.
So...here's the question (about time I got to the point, eh?)...did you keep the Roto 66's on the VP? If so, what's your take on them?
I'm thinking I'll have the Roto's put on (XL since the RD allows for through-body), and I can always swap 'em out for my TI flats if I don't like them...but I'd like to hear your experience w/ them.
(I'm a finger player...never use a pick...so I don't want noisy strings)

I’ve never understood that. And the more annoying buttah.
Yes! As though that confirmed some extra smooth slipperiness or greasiness, or something. Unfortunately I think it goes back to often and thinking people just repeating what they think is cool. Group-think or heard mentality. Kind of like "Thunderbirds have neck dive and are one trick pony's." That kind of thing probably sounds really hip among people who don't play Thunderbirds or know anything about them. It's not true, but it sounds really cool for those inside that uninformed bubble.

FYI:
I talked to my DR rep today. They have not discontinued the neon colored strings. And especially Black Beauties, which has become their #1 selling bass string.
That's good to know. They seem to sound the best on my 06 Gibson. You had better luck than I did when I emailed ER and I'm still waiting for a reply. I asked what's the difference between black beauties and the dragon skins. They supposedly are the same string and have the same K3 coating--but they feel different. I was wondering if they are the same string other than the color now. The dragon skins feel more like normal strings.

OK, I'll see about giving them a call manana-or tomorrow, whichever comes first. I'd asked for specifics and a pic or 2 of the 'neck repair' and also what the total would be sent to the nearest GC, plus tax. And a recappable tire.
Then I'd need to see what it would run to have it refinished. Not a fan of white. I was thinking more like puce or taupe, maybe digital USN camo.:rollno: Ooh, ecru!
ETA: Now I've got it: SP Daylight red for the wings and Daylight orange for the center section and neck with black for the hs.
One more thought: ACL purple for the wings and aluminum for the center/neck with black hs and "Champion"in purple on the aluminum(color) pg.
Are you kidding? There's enough surface space there to turn that thing into Thunderbird aircraft carrier bass!

You didn't ask me, but I'll chip in anyway...

I like RS66 on my bird. They have an aggressive sound that I think comes from the brightness. They have good bass and good mids (unlike Prosteels).

Finger noise - that's a feature, not a bug... ;) Actually, I don't think the finger noise is terrible - I have noticed much more with other strings. But, I think finger noise is more prominent with steel (vs nickel). Finger noise is also about technique - spending time working on changing position well has helped me reduce finger noise. Maybe flats make you lazy... ;):D
