Thunderbird Club

Since I took these off of the Pro V (they never sounded great on it - but they sound awesome on the GBP  )

I decided to try some of these on it:

...wow, that made a huge difference!

The 77's sounded kinda dead & thudd-y (that's a word, right? ); the 66's are much better suited to it. The sound really pops better, the active electronics are more responsive, and unlike with the 77's, it actually sounds like I have the overdrive on :meh:

So they'll get to stay on, instead of getting yanked off & thrown in a drawer :)

Welcome to the round side! What color ball end is the fifth string?

It's white.

Didn't notice 'til you asked, same color coding as the 77's (white, red, blue, white, red; B -> G)

The 66's have red silks at the tuners, none at the bridge; the 77's are also red at the tuners, but have black silks at the bridge.

...extra info...
:cautious:

Yeah, I've used the RS66 (4-string) a lot, so I was curious what color they used for the extra string. Cool.

I use those on my first bass, a short scale Silvertone 1490 which I haven’t played in a long time. Reminds me I need to pull it out and make sure it’s ok. It’s my project I haven’t gotten around to. I need to have Pickguardian or someone make a pickguard and find a bridge for it that will intonate. It also needs a pickup switch. I’ve had it 50 years this Christmas. Thousands of hours on it.

I'm kind of amazed at these differences in measurements in all the Epi birds. I'm kinda wondering if there is this much variability in Gibson Birds.
You'd kinda think if they know how to build it, they'd have a common specification, construction jig, or use a CNC machine to do it. Makes me wonder.
Things that make you go hmmm...It’s as if they just send an indicative design and leave it to the factory to build something like it.

Hey TBird clubbers... I'm thinking about TBird pickups for a custom build... I see that my choices, other than OEM Gibson pickups, seem to come down to Lulls, Lollars or Thunderbuckers?.. Thunderbuckers seem to be most price friendly... Does anyone have any others they can suggest, opinions, experiences or recommendations to make? I have not much personal experience with the TBird sound, but I know I like it and would like to add some to my arsenal... advice is much appreciated. Cheers.

I know what I like, but the thing is, there are lots of great choices out there, I would include Seymour Duncan, I have also used the "ChinaBuckers" but find they don't have the "depth" of tonal response as the more expensive options
TLDR you get what you pay for.
