We have talked about that very thing. Some think so, I disagree. A tribute is just that and not a form for your own music . I'm 43, I'm tired of making nothing playing original music. I totally support original bands, However, for me, it's all about a good crowd and getting paid for my effort. I do miss playing"my" music , and that can happen too.
I tend to agree with you on this... If I were to go and see a tribute band doing whatever tribute - That's what I (and probably most other people) would expect to see/hear - Not a set of original songs (no matter how good those songs are)...
It all depends on which scene your band is part of: If doing tributes the audience expects recognizable songs they can sing/dance to - not unfamiliar stuff.
On the scene my band is part of (electronica/EBM/industrial) it is expected the bands play originals and to a lesser extent a cover thrown in for good measure. Most band are also recording bands, so the audience are already familiar with the music...
